The rift within Anglicanism is taking on a concrete form.

The Global Anglican Communion, the body that emerged following the appointment of Sarah Mullally as “Archbishop” of Canterbury, has established its headquarters.

It will be based in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

The decision was made on August 22 in Recife, Brazil, by the Global Anglican Council and announced on August 29 by its president, Archbishop Laurent Mbanda.

We certainly do not mention this to rejoice in the crisis affecting our separated brethren, but to highlight the tragic consequences of choices such as the acceptance of women’s ordination to the priesthood, which are also frequently advocated within the Catholic world.

Why Africa?

The choice of location is not accidental.

Abuja is the city where, in March 2026, the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), the Anglican movement critical of progressive developments, gathered. The meeting brought together 347 bishops and 121 lay and clergy representatives from 27 provinces.

On that occasion, GAFCON challenged the role of structures linked to Canterbury, claiming to represent the continuity of Anglicanism faithful to Scripture and the tradition of the Reformation.

In the official statement, Archbishop Mbanda explicitly spoke of a “new chapter” and of the intention to “reorganize the Anglican Communion.”

The new headquarters will be more than an administrative center. Abuja is expected to gradually become a place for meetings, training and the preparation of Anglican leaders.

The choice of Africa also confirms the growing demographic and ecclesial weight of Anglican churches in the Global South, particularly those in Africa.

 

 

The Anglican schism after the Archbishop’s appointment

The development represents a further step in a story that UCCR has covered in recent months.

In October 2025, the first divisions emerged following the election of Sarah Mullally, the first woman to become Archbishop of Canterbury.

In March 2026, the Anglican schism was announced.

Meanwhile, GAFCON replaced the previous Primates Council with a Global Anglican Council, made up of primates, bishops, priests and lay people.

As a result of choices that are not shared by all and deeply divisive among the faithful, global Anglicanism now finds itself facing a radical transformation.

It is no longer merely an internal dispute, but the emergence of a parallel structure that seeks to challenge Canterbury and represent a significant part of the Anglican world.
