Abortion Doubles Mental Health Problems, New Study

Although feminists downplay it, abortion harms mental health. A new study finds double the risk of hospitalization for psychiatric problems compared to childbirth.
A significant link between abortion, mental health, and psychiatric hospitalization, according to a new analysis.
In the Journal of Psychiatric Research, it is reported that women who undergo a voluntary termination of pregnancy also have twice the likelihood of being hospitalized for mental health reasons.
A study that not only highlights once again the links between abortion and women’s mental health, but also refutes “pro-choice” advocates and feminists who claim that having an abortion is as simple as drinking a glass of water.
Feminists who downplay abortion
This is more or less the thesis of the Italian feminist Federica di Martino, psychotherapist and founder of the blog “IVG sto benissimo”, according to whom abortion is «a life experience», far from suffering. Moreover, di Martino adds, quoting her hallmark, «post-abortion trauma is absolutely not scientifically proven, on the contrary».
Di Martino was also a guest two years ago on the podcast of comedian Laura Formenti (see photo) where, together, they giggled for half an hour about abortion, mocking women who talk about it as trauma.
But on one side there are the opinions of feminists, and on the other the objective data that we present today, once again.
The study: abortion doubles psychiatric hospitalizations
The new research shows that the abortion experience leaves such a mark that it makes many women susceptible to serious mental disorders, to the point of requiring hospitalization.
It was conducted using data from hospitals in Quebec and Canada, between 2006 and 2022, and included over 1.2 million pregnancies up to 17 years after the end of the pregnancy (natural or via abortion) to identify mental health-related hospitalizations.
The results showed that rates of hospitalization for psychiatric reasons were higher after induced abortion compared to pregnancy (104.0 vs. 42.0 per 10,000 person-years), and links were also found with substance use disorders and suicide attempts, again far higher than in women who chose not to abort.
The association between voluntary termination of pregnancy and psychiatric hospitalizations was therefore highly significant especially within 5 years, after which the strength of the link tended to decrease over time.
Previous studies and the UCCR dossier
A finding that is reinforced by previously published studies conducted in different contexts.
In Germany, in 2023, it emerged for example that abortion, compared to childbirth, was associated with an increased risk of psychiatric conditions such as depression, adjustment disorders, and somatoform disorders.
These studies are included in the detailed dossier published on our website regarding Post-Abortion Syndrome, in which we collected all scientific research confirming all post-traumatic stress disorders linked to termination of pregnancy.
Despite claims to the contrary, abortion is never a neutral event, and the mental health consequences deserve concrete attention. Ignoring or underestimating these risks means betraying women, perhaps the gravest sin for those who call themselves feminists.
