The discoverer of the Omega number, Gregory Chaitin, explains that mathematics is a tool for drawing closer to God. The personal journey of the Argentine mathematician.
Argentine mathematician Gregory Chaitin is the latest addition to our highly popular list of famous believing scientists.
An honorary professor of Mathematics at the University of Buenos Aires and the Computer Science department at the University of Auckland (New Zealand), Chaitin is one of the most revolutionary figures in modern mathematics.
Gregory Chaitin, the Omega Number, and the Mathematical God
His most significant contribution is the introduction of the Omega number concept (In Pursuit of Omega, Adelphi 2017), demonstrating the insurmountable limits of our ability to predict and calculate, and that, in mathematics, some truths are valid but not provable.
His work has often brought him close to the mystery, to the unknowable.
As early as 1990, in New Scientist, he wrote that «God not only plays dice in physics but also in mathematics.»
He has frequently spoken of the “Programmer-God,” the “Mathematical-God,” and the concepts of randomness and purpose as being outside the scientific method.

Only recently, however, has Chaitin appeared to undergo a personal journey of spiritual closeness, transitioning from the god of mathematicians and Kurt Gödel to one more approachable and encounterable, as revealed in Christianity.
This was hinted at in a 2023 interview, but especially in a video interview that we have published (in English) on our new YouTube channel.
Chaitin’s Journey Toward a “Close God”
Chaitin’s words in the video are particularly striking, especially when he states:
«There are moments of enlightenment that occur when doing mathematics. Moments when you feel closer to God, where you suddenly feel you understand, you see the beauty, you see what is really happening. It’s like being on top of a mountain. I have a friend who climbed in Chile, where the mountains are spectacular, and he told me about reaching the summit of a snow-covered volcano. The sky was incredibly blue, and he broke into tears. It was like being in the presence of God, to use a word that’s unpopular today. It’s like a religious experience, and those are the moments that give meaning to everything. Why suffer and labor to understand something if you don’t have those moments of clarity? These are the moments, a spiritual person would say, that bring you closer to God.»
These are new concepts for Chaitin. It’s clear he has undergone a transformation. From the sterile “Programmer-God,” reduced to universal laws, to an opening toward a more transcendent, profound, and human experience.
God is no longer merely the organizer of the universe but the One who gives meaning to existence, and can be felt in moments of awe and beauty. From God as the “origin,” to God as the “presence”, felt through the human experience of wonder.
For great figures in modern science, as Gregory Chaitin undoubtedly is, this is no small step. That’s why we dedicated our video to him.
