Becoming Christian thanks to the world\u2019s most famous atheist<\/b>. The conversion of 12 intellectuals<\/strong> who came to faith after reading Richard Dawkins\u2019 books.<\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Richard Dawkins<\/mark><\/strong> as an apologist for faith?<\/p>\n As the “New Atheism”<\/strong><\/i> movement has gradually faded, one book has highlighted how prolific it has been in leading many people to the Christian faith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n It is titled Coming to Faith Through Dawkins<\/a><\/i><\/strong> (Kregel Publications, 2023).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Stay up to date by subscribing<\/strong> to our new channels:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For years, Dawkins was one of the leading figures among a group of scientists and philosophers<\/strong> who promoted a religious and fundamentalist form of atheism. Their works dominated the publishing scene for decades.<\/p>\n But for various reasons, which we have already discussed<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the dream eventually collapsed: the “New Atheism” proved empty, old and repetitive. It imploded.<\/p>\n The leaders of that movement no longer exist as such or have moved on to other pursuits, while some, such as biologist Jerry Coyne<\/strong>, have moments of nostalgia.<\/p>\n Last March, he had responded<\/a><\/em><\/strong> to UCCR<\/strong>, arguing that the “New Atheism” had not failed because it had nevertheless increased<\/strong> the number of nonbelievers in America.<\/p>\n Our response<\/a><\/em><\/strong> did not include one interesting detail: the “New Atheism” also led numerous intellectuals to faith.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n An interesting example can be found precisely in the book<\/strong> we are discussing today.<\/p>\n The editors are biologist Denis Alexander<\/strong> and converted theologian Alister McGrath<\/strong>.<\/p>\n It consists of twelve essays<\/strong> written by twelve figures from the intellectual world who share one thing in common: they were prompted<\/strong> to seriously reconsider their existential and religious convictions by Richard Dawkins\u2019 books.<\/p>\n We mention just a few: pediatrician Johan Erasmus<\/strong>, science publisher Anik\u00f3 Albert<\/strong>, artist Ashley Lande<\/strong>, and biochemist Sy Garte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Jerry Coyne Responds to UCCR, But Can\u2019t Save \u201cNew Atheism\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n One of the book\u2019s endorsements comes from Ard Louis<\/strong>, an eminent professor of theoretical physics at the University of Oxford.<\/p>\n Here is what the scientist writes<\/a><\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n \u00abIf Richard Dawkins did not exist<\/strong>, Christians would have had to invent him. As this fascinating collection of personal stories demonstrates, Dawkins\u2019 strong opposition to Christianity can push people to critically examine<\/strong> their deepest convictions and even radically change them. Although the authors reach conclusions about the Christian faith that are completely different from Dawkins\u2019, they all agree with him that what you believe really matters and that serious intellectual inquiry<\/strong>, without holding anything back, is the best way to advance one\u2019s thinking. We should be grateful to Richard Dawkins<\/strong> for inspiring this group of fascinating thinkers.\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Among the more amusing endorsements of the book is that of<\/a><\/em><\/strong> philosopher William Lane Craig<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Here is what he wrote: \u00abThis is an original book: true stories of people who came to faith, not despite, but through Richard Dawkins<\/strong>. It must be his worst nightmare!\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n Dawkins, king of atheists: but his disciple finds faith<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n But there is another fruit of Dawkins\u2019 (anti-)apologetics.<\/p>\n It has led many enlightened nonbelievers to publicly oppose<\/strong> the New Atheism<\/i>, drawing closer to Christians and becoming more willing to engage in dialogue with them.<\/p>\n One well-known example is Darwinian philosopher Michael Ruse<\/strong>, who was one of Dawkins\u2019 main opponents for many years.<\/p>\n Ruse (who died in 2024) also reviewed<\/a><\/strong><\/em> the book, writing:<\/p>\n \u00abIt is truly fascinating. Many people, including nonbelievers like me, have found Dawkins\u2019 atheism<\/strong> jarring, unpleasant and even offensive. I would never have imagined that, as this wonderful book so beautifully demonstrates, for some people Dawkins\u2019 invective would become a stimulus to Christian faith<\/strong>. One can be forgiven for feeling a strong element of pleasure.\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n So there are several converts thanks to Dawkins<\/strong>.
