From an illiterate girl to a <strong>Doctor of the Church<\/strong>.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On <strong>April 29<\/strong>, the Church celebrates <b><mark>Saint Catherine of Siena<\/b><\/mark>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most influential female figures of the Christian Middle Ages, <strong>Catherine Benincasa<\/strong> was the twenty-fourth of twenty-five children born into a family of craftsmen in Siena. She died in Rome in 1380, at only 33 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Who Was Catherine?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a time when female literacy was rare, especially among the lower classes, she <strong>never attended school<\/strong> and learned to read and write only as an adult. Yet she would go on to leave behind hundreds of <strong>letters<\/strong> addressed to the highest religious and political authorities of her time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After joining the \u201c<strong>Mantellate<\/strong>,\u201d the lay branch of the Dominican Order, Catherine initially lived a life of prayer and service to the poor and the sick.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before long, however, her <strong>spiritual reputation<\/strong> spread far beyond Siena. Around her formed a group of disciples, the so-called \u201cCaterinati,\u201d made up of clergy, nobles, and intellectuals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Catherine of Siena, Advisor to the Pope<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The role that made her historically decisive, however, was her <strong>political and ecclesial influence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the height of the Avignon Papacy crisis, Catherine wrote several times to <strong>Pope Gregory XI<\/strong>, urging him to move the papal seat from Avignon back to Rome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1376, she personally traveled to <strong>Avignon<\/strong> and, according to many historical sources, her intervention concretely contributed to the pontiff\u2019s decision to <strong>return to the Eternal City<\/strong> in 1377, a turning point considered crucial in the history of the Church.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Stay updated by <strong>subscribing<\/strong> to our new channels:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VbBFa0m9hXF1g4wrUT0z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-132039\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/whatsapp.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"74\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/uccr_news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-132040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/telegram.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"74\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>She Rebuked Kings, Princes, and Cardinals<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another of her great achievements was her <strong>commitment to peace<\/strong> among the Italian cities, then torn apart by wars, rivalries, and internal conflicts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Catherine often acted as a <strong>political mediator<\/strong>, attempting to reconcile noble families and rival city-states. Her more than <strong>400 letters<\/strong> to kings, princes, and bishops reveal an extraordinarily energetic and authoritative personality, capable of speaking frankly both to rulers and to prelates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She addressed powerful exhortations to various cardinals, imploring them to pursue the <strong>moral purity<\/strong> necessary to heal the Church. She knew how to <strong>rebuke them severely<\/strong>, while never neglecting humility and respect for their office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was also a central figure during the <strong>Western Schism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the election of <strong>Pope Urban VI<\/strong>, Catherine openly defended the legitimacy of the Roman pontiff \u2014 whom she called the <strong>\u201csweet Christ on earth\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 against the antipope supported by the Avignon faction, urging cardinals and European rulers to preserve the unity of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Genius of the Daughters of the Church<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After her death, the figure of <strong>Catherine<\/strong> continued to grow in importance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was canonized in 1461 by Pope Pius II, proclaimed <strong>Patron Saint of Italy<\/strong> in 1939 together with Saint Francis of Assisi, and named a <strong>Doctor of the Church<\/strong> in 1970 by Pope Paul VI, the first woman to receive this title together with Saint Teresa of \u00c1vila.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today she is also <strong>Co-Patroness of Europe<\/strong>, a title conferred upon her by Pope John Paul II in 1999.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The life of Saint Catherine of Siena is one of the clearest demonstrations of the <strong>genius<\/strong> of the daughters and sons of the Church, who throughout the centuries have shaped not only spirituality, but also culture, politics, and European history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On her feast day, we remember the role of Saint Catherine of Siena in bringing the Pope back from Avignon [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":62656,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"iawp_total_views":15,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2196,2195,2194],"class_list":["post-62655","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-catherine-of-siena","tag-catherine-of-siena-pope","tag-saint-catherine-of-siena"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.6 -
