G\u00e4nswein: \u201cThere was only one Pope; the other was emeritus.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every time <mark><strong>Msgr. Georg G\u00e4nswein<\/strong><\/mark> speaks, someone gets upset.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The beloved personal secretary of Benedict XVI is in fact the <strong>insurmountable obstacle<\/strong> against which conspiracy theories and speculative narratives crash\u2014those who for years have built fanciful stories around the <strong>resignation<\/strong> of the German pope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The interview granted yesterday to Ezio Mauro <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/20260420repubblica.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in <i>&#8220;La Repubblica&#8221;<\/i><\/a><\/em><\/strong> on the relationship between Benedict XVI and Pope Francis is yet another <strong>clear example<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The occasion is the first anniversary of the death of <strong>Pope Francis<\/strong>, on April 21, 2025. Exactly one year ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-133257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ganswein_papa-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>G\u00e4nswein: &#8220;Only one Pope, the other was emeritus&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThere was <strong>only one Pope<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, G\u00e4nswein immediately clarifies, correcting the interviewer\u2019s hasty definition of <i>\u201ctwo Popes\u201d<\/i> with <i>\u201cthe same white garments\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This sentence was repeated several times <strong>by Ratzinger himself<\/strong> when he <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2018\/12\/11\/benedetto-xvi-sostiene-francesco-ecco-tutti-i-discorsi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tried to counter<\/a><\/em><\/strong> with his last strength the conspiracy theories that began circulating about the invalidity of his resignation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThere are not two Popes. <strong>The Pope is only one<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, Ratzinger <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/20210301corriere.pdf\">said<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in 2021 to <i>&#8220;Corriere della Sera&#8221;<\/i>, complaining about <i>\u00absome of my friends, a bit \u201cfanatical\u201d, who are still angry and have not wanted to accept my decision\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was referring to certain cardinals (the German <strong>Brandm\u00fcller<\/strong>, in particular) who had publicly criticized his resignation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, even this obvious clarification was manipulated and used to claim, absurdly, that Benedict XVI was referring to himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Italian journalist <strong>Antonio Socci<\/strong>, the first supporter of the invalidity of the resignation (he changed his mind <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2022\/03\/07\/nuova-vita-per-antonio-socci-basta-sto-con-papa-francesco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2022<\/a><\/em><\/strong>), <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/20210302lostraniero.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that <i>\u00abit would have been a scoop if Joseph Ratzinger, besides repeating \u201cthe pope is one\u201d, had also mentioned the name\u00bb<\/i>. According to him, <strong>Benedict XVI<\/strong> should have added <i>\u00abthis simple <strong>little phrase<\/strong>: there is only one pope and it is Francis, while I am no longer pope\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This thesis was later <strong>copied and recycled<\/strong> by various imitators of Socci and still circulates online today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ratzinger\u2019s personal secretary lived at his side during the period when his thoughts were being manipulated and is fully <strong>aware<\/strong> of everything. He even went so far as to define as <i>\u00aba personal elaboration in the vein of <strong>Dan Brown<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000321e0000000000000000_62635\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62635-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62635-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"><b>G. Ganswein<\/b>, <i>\u201cNothing But the Truth. My Life Beside Benedict XVI\u201d<\/i>, Piemme 2023, p. 218<\/span> the thesis of a false abdication.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That is why yesterday he wanted to <strong>add<\/strong> an almost ridiculous obvious point, but evidently necessary:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00ab<strong>There was only one Pope<\/strong>. The other was still called Pope, <strong>but in reality he was the Pope emeritus<\/strong>. This is a major difference. I understand the visual effect, the two images in white clothing. But Benedict removed the mozzetta, set aside the sash, and changed the color of his shoes, in order to <strong>mark the difference<\/strong>. Of course there was an unprecedented coexistence between <strong>a reigning Pope<\/strong> and a Pope emeritus, as Benedict chose to be called. He chose it himself\u00bb<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Stay updated by <strong>subscribing<\/strong> to our new channels:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VbBFa0m9hXF1g4wrUT0z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-132039\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/whatsapp.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"74\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/uccr_news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-132040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/telegram.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"74\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>And the self-taught canon lawyers?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Faced with these words, what will the <strong>self-taught canon lawyers<\/strong> say?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Will they invent a <strong>\u201cG\u00e4nswein code\u201d<\/strong>? How will they twist or interpret his words to keep their theories alive?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>There is no longer any room<\/strong> for trials of intention, \u201cRatzinger codes\u201d and <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2026\/04\/21\/ratzingers-resignation-vatican-inquiry-is-merely-a-routine-procedure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeals<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in the Vatican to verify the resignation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let us also recall the release, one year ago, of the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2025\/08\/07\/ho-lasciato-anche-il-munus-il-testo-inedito-di-benedetto-xvi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unpublished text<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Benedict XVI<\/strong>, with which he tried once again to defend himself from his self-proclaimed admirers: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abTo say that in my resignation I left \u201conly the exercise of the ministry <strong>and not also the munus<\/strong>\u201d is contrary to clear dogmatic-canonical doctrine [\u2026]. If some journalists speak of a \u201ccreeping schism,\u201d they deserve no attention\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Other myths dismantled by G\u00e4nswein<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Msgr. G\u00e4nswein also <strong>dismantled<\/strong> other myths.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Who better than him, who <strong>accompanied<\/strong> Benedict XVI daily until the day of his death?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First of all, the <strong>false motivations<\/strong> that allegedly led to the resignation: <i>\u00abIt has nothing to do with Vatileaks, nor with the so-called <strong>homosexual lobbies<\/strong>, or anything else. The resignation was the result of deep reflection, of intense prayer: the Pope posed the question to his conscience and then decided\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding the relationship between <strong>Benedict and Francis<\/strong>, the German archbishop recounts the Argentine pope\u2019s desire to meet his predecessor immediately after being elected, and the great respect he showed him\u2014so much so that he insisted on <strong>always giving him precedence<\/strong> when they moved together within the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then comes Ratzinger\u2019s decision to live within St. Peter\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abHe wanted to remain <strong>within the enclosure of St. Peter\u2019s<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, explains G\u00e4nswein. <i>\u00abOnce, when he was still reigning, I asked him: \u2018Holy Father, where shall we go? Where do you want to live? Castel Gandolfo? The Vatican Gardens?\u2019 \u2018No, in the small Mater Ecclesiae monastery\u2019\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why? <i>\u00abHe had already chosen it, <strong>he liked that place<\/strong>, which allowed him to be <strong>inside yet distant<\/strong>, secluded. It was the right place\u00bb<\/i>. It also allowed Francis to <strong>visit him frequently<\/strong>, bringing him sweets and fostering <i>\u00aba growing familiarity\u00bb<\/i> between the two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The preface to Sarah\u2019s book<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ezio Mauro<\/strong> asks the archbishop about one of the most critical moments, the issue of <strong>Ratzinger\u2019s preface<\/strong> to Cardinal Sarah\u2019s book on priestly celibacy, while the Synod on the Amazon was discussing the topic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here too <strong>Georg G\u00e4nswein<\/strong> is keen to clarify:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abI must correct you somewhat. Pope Benedict <strong>did not write a preface<\/strong> to a book by Cardinal Sarah. He informed Pope Benedict that he was writing a book and asked whether he had any observations\u2014not on celibacy, but <strong>on the priesthood<\/strong>. Benedict wrote about thirty pages and sent them to the cardinal. Therefore, a book was <strong>never written<\/strong> by four hands, even though some deduced that Cardinal Sarah and Benedict himself, with this book, intended to pressure Pope Francis regarding the issue of celibacy. This intention certainly <strong>never existed<\/strong>, neither on the part of the cardinal nor, even less, on the part of Pope Benedict\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Ratzinger and Bergoglio\u2019s critics<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is also false that the Pope emeritus had become <strong>a reference point<\/strong> for conservatives critical of Bergoglio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThe real situation has been greatly exaggerated\u00bb<\/i>, G\u00e4nswein explains, <i>\u00abas if there had been a real procession to the Mater Ecclesiae monastery. This is not true\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The reality is that <i>\u00abthere were some <strong>observations<\/strong> about Francis\u2019 behavior and decisions, but it is <strong>perfectly normal<\/strong> to comment on a papal decision\u2014it is not forbidden in itself\u00bb<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Certainly, <i>\u00abit is <strong>not true<\/strong> that Benedict became a kind of confessor for that entire wing you called conservative. I have no evidence of that\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Benedict XVI and the Latin Mass<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The interview also briefly mentions <strong>\u201cTraditionis Custodes\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This refers to the decision of July 16, 2021, which restricted the celebration of the Tridentine Mass by entrusting authorization to individual bishops. Well, explains Msgr. G\u00e4nswein, <i>\u00ab<strong>Benedict<\/strong> never commented on Pope Francis\u2019 motu proprio \u201cTraditionis Custodes\u201d\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Any tensions between the two, even on this matter, are placed within a <strong>far less conflictual<\/strong> framework than is often portrayed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, he adds: <i>\u00abIn my book I wrote that when we read L\u2019Osservatore Romano, <strong>Benedict\u2019s heart<\/strong> grew heavy. That is true\u2014but I say it, not him\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nevertheless, he further clarifies that, beyond differences\u2014which <i>\u00abare <strong>not a bad thing<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>\u2014both Benedict and Francis <i>\u00abwere <strong>witnesses of the Resurrection<\/strong> of the Lord\u00bb<\/i>. This is the most relevant aspect that united them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The \u201cmark\u201d of being Ratzinger\u2019s collaborator<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding his relationship with Francis, the current apostolic nuncio clarifies a phrase he had used in the past: <i>\u201cAs a collaborator of Ratzinger, I evidently carry <strong>a mark of Cain<\/strong>\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today he explains: <i>\u00abI said this in general, <strong>not<\/strong> in reference to Pope Francis. It is clear that the figure of Joseph Ratzinger aroused both <strong>friends and enemies<\/strong>, so to speak. And since I was his very close collaborator for many years, <strong>this mark<\/strong> has remained on me.
