justify;\"><i>A Polish newspaper closes its investigation into John Paul II: as a cardinal, <mark><strong>he did not cover up pedophilia<\/strong><\/mark> and, on the contrary, acted promptly even before civil authorities.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How did <mark><strong>John Paul II<\/strong><\/mark> handle abuse cases when he was Archbishop of Krakow?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, finally, <strong>evidence has emerged<\/strong> thanks to an investigation by a secular Polish newspaper that is usually critical of the Church: neither state archives nor Church archives contain evidence that he covered up cases of pedophilia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the contrary, in many cases he <strong>acted promptly<\/strong> and in ways that were unprecedented for the standards of the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>In 2023, the campaign against Wojtyla<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is news that, of course, <strong>no one will report<\/strong>, yet in 2023 a very strong media campaign was launched against Wojtyla.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are <strong>some headlines<\/strong> from major newspapers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>&#8220;John Paul II covered up abuse of minors when he was a cardinal&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;Le Monde&#8221;);<\/li>\n<li><i>&#8220;John Paul II knew about abuse when he was archbishop&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;Associated Press&#8221;);<\/li>\n<li><i>&#8220;John Paul II covered up pedophilia&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;Euronews&#8221;);<\/li>\n<li><i>&#8220;Wojtyla knew about sexual abuse since he was Archbishop of Krakow&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;Domani&#8221;)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In April 2023, the monument to Wojtyla in Krakow was even <strong>defaced<\/strong> with the words &#8220;Maxima culpa&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only the Polish historian <strong>Lucja Marek<\/strong>, a researcher at the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), publicly defended the Polish Pope, <u><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.repubblica.it\/cronaca\/2023\/10\/19\/news\/wojtyla_preti_pedofili_sovrainterpretazione-418204281\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explaining<\/a><\/em><\/u> that the accusations were misleadingly produced by communist secret services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, that &#8220;maxima culpa&#8221; has proven to be unfounded.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The (secular) investigation by the Polish newspaper<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u><b><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rp.pl\/kosciol\/art43954231-kard-karol-wojtyla-nie-kryl-pedofili-rzeczpospolita-zbadala-zamkniete-dotad-archiwa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This was discovered<\/a><\/em><\/b><\/u> by the economic and legal newspaper <i>&#8220;<mark><strong>Rzeczpospolita<\/mark><\/strong>&#8220;<\/i>, based in Warsaw, editorially independent and at times critical of the Church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After obtaining access to previously unavailable documents from the <strong>Metropolitan Curia of Krakow<\/strong>, journalists conducted a detailed analysis of cases involving priests accused and, in some instances, convicted of abuse of minors during the period when Wojtyla was archbishop, <strong>between 1962 and 1978<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They were thus able to conclude that there is <strong>no direct evidence<\/strong> of a cover-up by Cardinal Wojtyla.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not only that, here is what they write: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cOur research shows that Cardinal Karol Wojtyla <strong>did not transfer<\/strong> priests from one parish to another after learning of their criminal activities, but instead <strong>acted swiftly<\/strong>, and some of his decisions were unusual for the time.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And again: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cWe found <strong>no evidence<\/strong> that Cardinal Karol Wojtyla knowingly covered up cases of pedophilia, and the <strong>transfers of priests<\/strong> were due to their conflict-prone nature.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Wojtyla acted even before the police<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In several cases (including the most well-known ones of Eugeniusz Surgent and J\u00f3zef Loranc), documents show that Wojtyla <strong>ordered the suspension<\/strong> from ministry of accused priests, <strong>removed them<\/strong> from their parishes, and imposed restrictions even before civil authorities completed their investigations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the investigation, a particularly significant decision dates back to <strong>1969<\/strong>, when Wojtyla ordered a psychiatric evaluation for a priest suspected of abusing minors\u2014an action described as <strong>completely unprecedented<\/strong> in the historical context.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In several cases, as reported by <i>&#8220;Rzeczpospolita&#8221;<\/i>, <i>\u201cWojtyla\u2019s decisions <strong>preceded<\/strong> the intervention of law enforcement.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most \u201csensitive\u201d case concerned <strong>Boles\u0142aw Sadu\u015b<\/strong>, as the transfer of the priest to Austria was documented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, according to the newly examined documents, <i>\u201cthere is <strong>no evidence<\/strong> that Wojtyla was aware of his alleged abuses, and his transfer to Austria does not represent an attempt at concealment.\u201d<\/i> The Institute of National Remembrance reached the same conclusion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-132149\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/wojtyla_pedofilia.webp\" alt=\"wojtyla pedophilia\" width=\"827\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The accusations of communist secret services<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These elements represent <strong>a turning point<\/strong> for public opinion, which had been strongly influenced by interpretations derived from controversial sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, <strong>neither in Italy nor abroad<\/strong> will this news likely be picked up by anyone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It should be recalled that the accusations against the Polish Pope originated from a Polish television investigation based on documents from the <strong>archives of the communist secret services<\/strong>, which are far from reliable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Their <strong>fabrication of false dossiers<\/strong> aimed at discrediting the Catholic Church\u2014one of the regime\u2019s main opponents\u2014is well known.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, in the 1960s and 1970s, the issue of abuse in society at large followed <strong>very different standards<\/strong> from those of today. In the West, there was even a push toward <strong>sexual hedonism<\/strong> that led some to view pedophilia as a form of sexual liberation for minors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only decades later was the phenomenon recognized in its full systemic gravity, leading to stricter reforms by all institutions, including the Catholic Church itself. It is no coincidence that, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2025\/01\/22\/chiesa-il-92-degli-abusi-durante-il-boom-sessantottino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as we have documented<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, almost all accusations of pedophilia in the Church date back to <strong>the 1960s cultural revolution period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for Pope <strong>John Paul II<\/strong>, it was precisely he who introduced <strong>important reforms<\/strong> to the Church\u2019s legal framework regarding sexual abuse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Polish newspaper concludes its investigation into John Paul II: as a cardinal, he did not cover up pedophilia and acted promptly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":62543,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"iawp_total_views":347,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2162,2161,2163],"class_list":["post-62542","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-church-pedophilia","tag-wojtyla","tag-wojtyla-accusation"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.6 -
