Scholars put the historical sources to the test, finding it almost <strong>impossible<\/strong> to provide a biography. What little is known is that he spread a biblical message.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Who was <mark><strong>Muhammad<\/strong><\/mark>? A new academic project reignites the historical debate on the founder of Islam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently in France, <strong><i>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.it\/Mahomet-historiens-0-John-Tolan\/dp\/220415007X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le Mahomet des historiens<\/a>&#8220;<\/i><\/strong> (<i>&#8220;Muhammad According to Historians&#8221;<\/i>) (Les \u00c9ditions du Cerf 2025), a monumental two-volume work (over 2,000 pages) curated by <strong>Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi<\/strong> and <strong>John Tolan<\/strong>, with contributions from fifty international specialists, has been released.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The goal? To scientifically explore the figure of Muhammad, his message, his biography, and his cultural impact beyond myth and devotion, meticulously analyzing <strong>all sources<\/strong>\u2014Islamic and non-Islamic, Arab, Christian, Persian, African, as well as mystical or literary texts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Muhammad, no historical certainty<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the encyclopedic effort, the historians involved emphasize a crucial point: what can be considered <strong>certain<\/strong> about the historical life of <strong>Muhammad<\/strong> is extremely limited.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/le-monde-des-religions\/article\/2025\/11\/01\/mohammad-ali-amir-moezzi-et-john-tolan-specialistes-de-l-islam-ce-que-l-historien-peut-savoir-de-maniere-certaine-sur-mahomet-n-excede-pas-deux-pages_6650785_6038514.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview with <i>Le Monde<\/i><\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the project\u2019s main leader, <strong>Ali Amir-Moezzi<\/strong>, Emeritus Director at the \u00c9cole Pratique des Hautes \u00c9tudes (Paris) and one of the world\u2019s leading Islamologists, even states that <i>\u201cwhat historians can assert with certainty about Muhammad perhaps <strong>does not exceed two pages<\/strong>\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, thirty years ago, <i><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/4057518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the journal &#8220;Arabica&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/i>, anthropologist <strong>Jacqueline Chabbi<\/strong> argued that <em>\u201cit is impossible, using critical methods, to write a <strong>historical biography of Muhammad<\/strong> because the sources about him are late, contradictory, full of approximations and errors, and theologically and politically biased\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first known biographical account of Muhammad, that of Ibn Is\u1e25\u0101q, reworked by Ibn Hish\u0101m, dates <strong>to over a century after<\/strong> his death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The same authors of the recent work, the aforementioned Amir-Moezzi and <strong>John Tolan<\/strong>, Emeritus Professor at the University of Nantes, confirm in the interview that <i>\u201cif one manages to write a biography of Muhammad, it is because <strong>one does not adopt a critical approach<\/strong> to the texts. And if one wants to adopt a critical approach, the attempt becomes simply impossible\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-131291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/muhammad-who-is-he.png\" alt=\"who was Muhammad\" width=\"632\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>His message was biblical, not Islamic<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In detail, according to scholars, it can be reconstructed with relative certainty only that Muhammad lived in western Arabia <strong>at the end of the 6th century<\/strong>. Everything else is shrouded in the fog of late and contradictory sources, including his birth and death dates, the number of his children and wives, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another established fact is that the founder of Islam, scholars explain, brought <i>\u00aba message situated <strong>within<\/strong> the Jewish and Christian monotheistic tradition\u00bb<\/i>, announcing the end of the world and inviting people to repent, to be pious, to give alms, and to be kind to one another in order to be <strong>spared<\/strong> from God\u2019s wrath.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amir-Moezzi also explains that the Quranic text <i>\u00abis presented as <strong>an extension<\/strong> of Moses\u2019 Torah and Jesus\u2019 Gospel (Sura 5, 46)\u00bb<\/i>, announcing apocalyptic themes that <i>\u00abare clearly Jewish and Christian\u00bb<\/i>. The only distinction is that, in the Quran, <i>\u00abGod regularly speaks in the first person\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is interesting how Amir-Moezzi specifies that this message is classified by historians as <strong>Biblical<\/strong>, while co-author John Tolan, Emeritus Professor at the University of Nantes, notes that the Islamic sacred text presents a population <i>\u00abwidely familiar with the monotheistic universe\u00bb<\/i>, therefore biblical, so much so that the Quran constantly refers to <strong>stories from the Bible<\/strong>, <i>\u00abparticularly those of the prophets from the Old and New Testaments, allusively, as if they were already known to everyone\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This aligns, among other things, with the thesis of two scholars discussed by <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2025\/10\/03\/il-corano-ritiene-divino-il-vangelo-la-scoperta-che-scuote-lislam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCCR recently<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, according to which the Quran specifically refers to the <strong>Syriac Peshitta<\/strong>, a text identical to the current Gospel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Quran does not specify at all that <strong>Muhammad<\/strong>, mentioned only four times, differs in any way from the Jewish and Christian prophets, nor that he intended to found a new religion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Quran spread thanks to Luther<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end of the interview with <i>&#8220;Le Monde&#8221;<\/i>, <strong>Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi<\/strong> explains that Christian intellectuals in the Middle Ages, at least until the 16th century, considered Muhammad to be <strong>a false prophet<\/strong>, also because the Gospels had foretold the arrival of such figures. Even more so considering that the Quran incorporated biblical elements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Everything changed in 1543 when the Quran was translated into Latin with a preface by <strong>Martin Luther<\/strong>. Since then, the scholar explains, <i>\u00abProtestant authors found arguments <strong>against the Catholics<\/strong> in the Muslim text\u00bb<\/i> and thus, <i>\u00abalthough the perception of Islam remained negative, it was perhaps a lesser evil compared to Catholicism from a Protestant perspective\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the <strong>Enlightenment<\/strong>, a positive image of Muhammad developed, <i>\u00abperceived as a great spiritual figure and poet, particularly by <strong>Goethe<\/strong> and <strong>Victor Hugo<\/strong>, with the idea that Muslims had preserved a spirituality that Europeans had lost with modernity. For his part, Napoleon considered him a great lawgiver\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1979, with the Iranian revolution, <strong>political Islam<\/strong> effectively emerged, and since then the Muslim religion has been seen as a threat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Difference with Christian Sources<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This happens when, for once, the <strong>historical-critical method<\/strong> is not applied to Christian sources but, in this case, to Islamic ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For centuries, Christianity has <strong>withstood almost unscathed<\/strong> the rigorous analysis of sources, and in fact, today we know that the key data about the historical Jesus were known <i>\u201calmost certainly in Roman Palestine <strong>of the 30s<\/strong> of the 1st century\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000321e0000000000000000_62492\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62492-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62492-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"><b>B. Ehrman<\/b>, <i>Did Jesus Exist?<\/i> HarperCollins Publishers 2012, pp. 132-133<\/span>, thus contemporaneously with his crucifixion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In short, the same methodological rigor that allowed Christianity to be \u201cput to the test,\u201d when applied to Islam, reveals <strong>a fundamental problem<\/strong>: the certain sources are too few, and much of what is believed about <strong>Muhammad<\/strong> remains, for historians, a reconstruction that can hardly be called historical.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Muhammad, who was he?
