The Church also clarifies that <strong>sex within marriage<\/strong> serves a unitive purpose, <strong>not only a procreative<\/strong> one.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The long-announced document <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_ddf_doc_20251125_una-caro_it.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>\u201cUna caro. Praise of Monogamy\u201d<\/i><\/a><\/strong> has now been officially released by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was published just a few hours ago and offers a reflection on the essential value of <strong>monogamy in Christian marriage<\/strong>, defined as an exclusive union and mutual belonging <i>\u201cbetween one woman and one man.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There will certainly be time to analyze the document in greater detail, but for now we would like to focus on one of the points raised by the Dicastery: the <b><mark>sexual purpose of marriage<\/mark><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Does the Church teach that sex is only for procreation?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This topic interests us particularly because of the <strong>widespread prejudices<\/strong> in society, which we have <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2018\/09\/18\/chiesa-e-sessualita-il-papa-smonta-tutti-i-falsi-miti-in-un-solo-discorso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addressed many times<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How often do we hear that the Church supposedly <strong>&#8220;allows&#8221; sex only for procreation<\/strong>? According to this widespread belief, sexual activity would be permitted by the Vatican strictly for reproductive purposes, as if the Church were radically sex-phobic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is one of the <strong>most frequently repeated falsehoods<\/strong>, and one believed even by many priests and lay Catholics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>From the Church Fathers to Vatican II<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The newly published document, however, clarifies that <strong>conjugal sexuality<\/strong> (that is, sexuality between spouses) also has a fundamental <strong>unitive purpose<\/strong>, not necessarily linked to procreation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the very introduction of the <i>Nota<\/i>, it is emphasized that sexual union <i>\u201cis not limited to ensuring <strong>procreation<\/strong>, but contributes to enriching and strengthening <strong>the unique and exclusive union<\/strong> and the sense of mutual belonging.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The marital act, understood also in its unitive dimension\u2014beautifully expressed by the phrase <strong>\u201cmaking love\u201d<\/strong>\u2014is supported through citations from several <strong>Church Fathers<\/strong> who criticized excessive continence within marriage (<strong>St. John Chrysostom<\/strong> and <strong>St. Clement of Alexandria<\/strong>). Furthermore, <strong>St. Alphonsus Maria de\u2019 Liguori<\/strong> described the sexual relationship between spouses as an <i>\u201cessential intrinsic end\u201d<\/i>, while considering procreation as <i>\u201can intrinsic but accidental end.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, he wrote that <i>\u201cthree ends may be considered in marriage: essential intrinsic ends, accidental intrinsic ends, and accidental extrinsic ends. The essential intrinsic ends are two: <strong>mutual self-gift<\/strong>, with the obligation to fulfill the marital debt [that is, sexual relations], and the indissoluble bond. The accidental intrinsic ends are also two: <strong>the generation of offspring<\/strong>, and the remedy for concupiscence.\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"><b>A.M. de\u2019 Liguori<\/b>, <i>&#8220;Theologia moralis&#8221;<\/i>, Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis, Rome 1912, lib. VI, tract. VI, cap. II, dub. I, n. 882<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This tradition continues up to the <strong>Second Vatican Council<\/strong>, which in <i>&#8220;Gaudium et spes&#8221;<\/i> presented marriage as a work of God consisting of a communion of life and love shared by the spouses, a <i>\u201ccommunion which,\u201d<\/i> as the <i>Nota<\/i> specifies, <i>\u201cis not ordered solely to procreation, but also to the integral good of both.\u201d<\/i>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The same teaching was reaffirmed by <strong>Paul VI<\/strong> in his encyclical <i>&#8220;Humanae vitae&#8221;<\/i>, when he <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a><\/em><\/strong> to preserve <i>\u201cthese essential qualities, the unitive and the procreative\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Purposes of Sex in John Paul II<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was <strong>John Paul II<\/strong> who perhaps most frequently emphasized <strong>the unitive purpose<\/strong>, not only the procreative one, in Catholic marriage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He even acknowledged that, on this subject, <i>\u201cCatholic thought is often <strong>misunderstood<\/strong>, as if the Church supported an ideology of <strong>unlimited fertility<\/strong>, pushing spouses to have children without any discernment or planning\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yet, the Polish Pope <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/it\/angelus\/1994\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_ang_19940717.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, <i>\u201call it takes is a careful reading of the Magisterium\u2019s teachings to see that <strong>this is not the case<\/strong>\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <i>Note<\/i> also cites writings of the young Wojtyla, who, speaking of the conjugal act, stated that <i>\u201cbeing in itself an act of love that unites two persons, it may <strong>not necessarily be considered<\/strong> by them as a conscious and deliberate means of procreation\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\"><b>K. Wojtyla<\/b>, <i>&#8220;Love and Responsibility&#8221;<\/i>, Marietti 1980, p. 173<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Use of Natural Methods<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is where <strong>natural methods<\/strong> of fertility regulation come into play, those that <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2013\/10\/30\/la-differenza-tra-metodi-naturali-e-contraccettivi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many mistakenly define<\/a><\/em><\/strong> as \u201cCatholic contraception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Already Paul VI <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminded<\/a><\/em><\/strong> us that <i>\u201cthe Church teaches that married people may then take advantage of the <strong>natural cycles<\/strong> immanent in the reproductive system and engage in marital intercourse only during those times that are <strong>infertile<\/strong>, thus controlling birth\u201d<\/i> and also choosing the most suitable moments to welcome new life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, continued <strong>Pope Paul VI<\/strong>, the couple may make use of these periods <i>\u201cas a mutual love and safeguard their fidelity toward one another. In doing this they certainly give proof of a true and authentic love.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>And What About Those Who Have No Children?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Vatican <i>Note<\/i> also addresses the delicate topic of <strong>the absence of children<\/strong> in marriage and, drawing once again from the great Fathers (Augustine, St. John Chrysostom), explains that marriage <strong>remains a good<\/strong> even if children do not arrive. Otherwise, writes <strong>Saint Augustine<\/strong>, <i>\u201cit would not continue to be called marriage even for the elderly, especially when they may have lost children or never had any at all.\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\"><b>Augustine<\/b>, <i>&#8220;De bono coniugali&#8221;<\/i>, 3, 3: PL 40, 375<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Karol Wojtyla<\/strong> also explained that <i>\u201cfor many reasons, marriage may not become a family, but this lack <strong>does not deprive it<\/strong> of its essential character.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, <i>\u201ca marriage in which there are no children, <strong>through no fault of the spouses<\/strong>, retains the full value of the institution and <strong>loses<\/strong> nothing of its importance.\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000321e0000000000000000_62486-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\"><b>K.
