Archaeologists have found evidence of an ancient garden beneath the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre<\/strong>, just as the Gospel of John describes. It is yet another indication that the Fourth Gospel<\/strong> rests on solid historical ground.<\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n When modern archaeology confirms the historical reliability<\/strong> of the Gospels.<\/p>\n This occurred a few months ago when archaeological excavations conducted beneath the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre<\/strong><\/mark> in Jerusalem uncovered an ancient garden<\/strong> next to the place of the crucifixion.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Researchers from the University of Sapienza<\/em> in Rome, led by Prof. Francesca Romana Stasolla<\/strong>, identified<\/a><\/em><\/strong> pollen and plant remains traceable to olive trees and grapevines dating back more than two thousand years.<\/p>\n These are traces that confirm a scene mentioned exclusively in the Gospel of John<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In chapter 19 we read: \u201cNow in the place where He had been crucified, there was a garden<\/strong>, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid\u201d (Jn 19:41).<\/p>\n This very description appears to find confirmation<\/strong> in the archaeobotanical analyses performed by the scientists: the soil layers can be traced to an agricultural area of pre-Christian Jerusalem<\/strong>, not yet part of the fortified city under Herod, but rather cultivated land outside the walls.<\/p>\n The archaeologists also found low stone structures filled with soil, suggesting the use of the land for cultivation<\/strong>\u2014consistent with the Gospel\u2019s description of a garden.<\/p>\n The site, as mentioned, exhibits layers that predate the Christian era, indicating that the area was already in use<\/strong> well before the construction of the 4th-century Constantinian basilica.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This finding is important because it concerns precisely the Gospel of John<\/strong>, often regarded as less \u201chistorical\u201d or less closely tied to actual events than the synoptics Matthew, Mark, and Luke.<\/p>\n Many critics have argued that John is a less reliable<\/strong> witness: more theological, symbolic, and late.<\/p>\n However, many scholars have long begun to rehabilitate<\/strong> the Fourth Evangelist. We have noted this when discussing the latest book by biblical scholar Craig Blomberg<\/strong>, who has called for a fourth quest for the historical Jesus, drawing precisely from John\u2014a source widely neglected, often intentionally so.<\/p>\n Not only was it a text entirely independent of the synoptic Gospels, as we have recently shown<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, but it often preserves earlier and more historically reliable material<\/strong> than the other Gospels.<\/p>\n For example, regarding John the Baptist, the dating of the Last Supper, and the dating of the death of Jesus.<\/p>\n
