{"id":62426,"date":"2025-11-11T20:30:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T19:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=62426"},"modified":"2025-11-11T20:30:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T19:30:32","slug":"gianna-jessen-a-woman-aborted-in-the-name-of-womens-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/11\/11\/gianna-jessen-a-woman-aborted-in-the-name-of-womens-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Gianna Jessen, a Woman Aborted in the Name of Women\u2019s Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-129454\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/jessen2.webp\" alt=\"gianna jessen women's rights\" width=\"604\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>The powerful testimony of <strong>Gianna Jessen<\/strong>, survivor of abortion and living with disabilities: \u201cIf abortion is about a woman\u2019s <strong>right to choose<\/strong>, then what was mine?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The guest of honor at Zurich\u2019s \u201cMarch for Life\u201d was <mark><strong>Gianna Jessen<\/strong><\/mark>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her story is <strong>one of the most powerful<\/strong> testimonies of the paradox of a society that, in the name of <strong>women\u2019s right to choose<\/strong>, attempts to suppress <strong>the lives of women<\/strong> before they are even born.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Gianna Jessen, Victim of the Women\u2019s Right to Choose<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born on April 6, 1977, in Los Angeles, Gianna survived a <strong>late-term saline abortion attempt<\/strong>, a horrific procedure that, though less common today, was used for years to terminate advanced pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A substance is injected that <strong>causes burns and damage<\/strong> to the fetus\u2019s tissues and central nervous system, as well as <strong>dehydration<\/strong> and death within a few hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The abortion doctors were certain they had killed Gianna, but she defied expectations, being born alive and growing up with a <strong>motor disability<\/strong> that she herself calls a \u201ctremendous gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She became <strong>an uncomfortable activist<\/strong> defending unborn children, invited all over the world to tell her story. At one of these events, she even encountered <strong>her mother<\/strong> sitting among the audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In her speech in Zurich, she shared her experience of survival and spoke especially to the <strong>men present<\/strong>, urging them to promote a culture of life: <i>\u201cIt\u2019s important that you dedicate your life to your wives and children!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cIs Abortion About a Woman\u2019s Right? Then What Was Mine?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her story has become <strong>a powerful symbol<\/strong> in the abortion debate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2010\/11\/26\/gianna-jessen-donna-abortita-per-i-diritti-della-donna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On several occasions<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Gianna has raised <strong>a crucial question<\/strong>: <i>\u201cIf abortion is about women\u2019s rights, what were my rights?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This highlights an <strong>intrinsic contradiction<\/strong>: how can a society that claims to defend women\u2019s rights justify the suppression of a female life still in the mother\u2019s womb?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To respond, some resort to <strong>rhetorical and dangerous tricks<\/strong> such as denying the personhood of life in the womb \u2014 arguments that are addressed in our <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2014\/01\/26\/tutte-le-risposte-agli-argomenti-pro-aborto-manuale-pro-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicated dossier<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gianna\u2019s story mirrors that of <strong>Hope<\/strong>, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2016\/06\/17\/vedi-quel-segno-sulla-fronte-lho-ricevuto-in-nome-del-diritto-della-donna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whose story we have already told<\/a><\/em><\/strong> \u2014 another <strong>woman victim<\/strong> of an attempted application of the \u201cwoman\u2019s right,\u201d which, however, failed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also an abortion survivor, she is now forced to live with <strong>cerebral palsy<\/strong> and bears a scar on her forehead \u2014 the spot where the doctor struck her violently in an attempt to suppress a life <strong>too stubborn<\/strong> to yield to others\u2019 rights to choose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Powerful Testimony of Gianna Jessen: \u201cIf Abortion Is About a Woman\u2019s Right to Choose, Then What Was Mine?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":62427,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"iawp_total_views":324,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2103,2105,2104],"class_list":["post-62426","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-abortion-right","tag-gianna-jessen","tag-right-to-choose-abortion"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.6 -
