A slow paradigm shift in favor of <strong>panpsychism<\/strong> after the crisis of <strong>materialism<\/strong> due to modern science.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <strong>quiet change<\/strong>, but deep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Something is happening year after year in the current philosophical and neuroscientific scenario. <strong>Materialism<\/strong> is in crisis and interest in alternative, radically opposite positions is slowly growing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2024\/11\/30\/cose-il-fisicalismo-materialista-e-perche-e-morto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We already talked about it a year ago<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, noting <strong>the death of physicalism<\/strong> and taking note of the observation by the specialist <strong>Marc Wittmann<\/strong> that <i>\u201cthe absurdity of self-denial and the denial of phenomenal consciousness is today challenged by <strong>a form of idealism<\/strong> that proclaims that consciousness is all that exists.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While <strong>materialism<\/strong> has always promised to be able to explain every phenomenon starting from physical or chemical processes, including consciousness, thoughts and emotions, new scientific theories have transformed that dream into an illusion. That worldview has become <strong>unsustainable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is how interest in alternative positions has emerged in academia, and <mark><strong>panpsychism<\/strong><\/mark> is currently the most popular model.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is panpsychism?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what is it about? And what does <strong>panpsychism<\/strong> mean?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Modern panpsychism goes back to an ancient philosophical belief according to which <strong>some form of consciousness<\/strong> can be found in all things, in every element of reality. It derives from the Greek <i>pan<\/i>, meaning \u201call\u201d, and from <i>psyche<\/i>, meaning \u201csoul, mind\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While materialism radically denied every &#8220;non-material&#8221; aspect, panpsychism holds that <strong>all of reality<\/strong> possesses a form of experience or interiority. From one extreme to the other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It should be clarified that panpsychists do not claim that everything is \u201cconscious\u201d like humans are, but that even elementary particles, atoms or physical systems have <strong>a primitive mental aspect<\/strong>, a kind of \u201cproto-consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Who are the panpsychists<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But why is panpsychism having such success? Why is it discussed as a serious theory <strong>in specialist journals<\/strong> such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg24632800-900-is-the-universe-conscious-it-seems-impossible-until-you-do-the-maths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>New Scientist<\/i><\/a><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The reason is that it is now commonly believed that consciousness <strong>could not have suddenly emerged<\/strong>, by chance, out of nothing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For panpsychists, consciousness is rather <strong>a fundamental property of the universe<\/strong>, a constitutive dimension of being, just like space, time or mass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More and more scientists, neuroscientists and philosophers are <strong>embracing<\/strong> this doctrine, albeit in different forms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the best known is <strong>Christoph Koch<\/strong>, known for having lost the famous bet with David J. Chalmers when in 1999 he argued that within 25 years the neural mechanism producing consciousness would be found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/thereader.mitpress.mit.edu\/is-consciousness-everywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argues<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that <i>\u201cconsciousness is an intrinsic and fundamental aspect of reality\u201d<\/i> and that such experience <i>\u201cis found <strong>in unexpected places<\/strong>, including all animals, large and small, and perhaps even in raw matter itself.\u201d<\/i> Going so far as to acknowledge that <i>\u201cthe universe turns out to be <strong>a well-ordered place<\/strong>, much more rational than modernity, blinded by its technological supremacy over the natural world, believes.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Koch adheres to the Integrated Information Theory theorized by the Italian <strong>Giulio Tononi<\/strong>, a form of &#8220;soft panpsychism&#8221; attributing consciousness only to what contains a certain degree of irreducible cause-effect power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Panpsychism, an escape route for consciousness<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The explanation of <strong>consciousness<\/strong> is therefore the stumbling block of <strong>materialism<\/strong> \u2014 after all it cannot answer this simple question: if our minds are only illusions or cerebral noise, why should we trust materialism or anything else our brain produces?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The philosopher <strong>Galen Strawson<\/strong> is among those who have slowly moved from physicalism to panpsychism <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1ydqAhPNuyY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognizing<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that it is <strong>more sensible<\/strong> to argue that consciousness emerges from electrons rather than that it does not exist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to many Christian scientists, panpsychism, however, appears more like <strong>an escape route<\/strong> to avoid falling into theism \u2014 that is, to avoid having to introduce an external transcendent subject. Sensing the difficulty, some materialists have turned to panpsychism as a fallback position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These are <strong>typical dynamics<\/strong> that recur in history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It happened, for example, when from the observation of the crisis of <strong>abiogenesis<\/strong> (the spontaneous origin of life from non-life) people moved to <strong>directed panspermia<\/strong> (the origin of life caused by aliens).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Or when, faced with the principle of <strong><em>cosmological fine-tuning<\/em><\/strong> (the laws and fundamental constants of nature seem specially set for the emergence of life), the response was to invoke the <strong>Multiverse theory<\/strong> (our universe is only one of infinite parallel universes, each with different physical laws and conditions).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It should still be said that <strong>panpsychism<\/strong> proves to be an intellectually finer option than the crude materialist approach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The limits of panpsychism<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Panpsychism is not, however, free of problems, among them the fact that it <strong>merely shifts the problem<\/strong> of the origin of consciousness by simply turning it into an intrinsic property of matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In doing so it also introduces <strong>an additional principle<\/strong> (intrinsic consciousness) which needlessly increases complexity enormously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Attributing consciousness to elemental levels of being does not even explain the <strong>qualitative and unified character<\/strong> of the specific human experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps the value of panpsychism therefore does not lie in providing answers, but in reminding us that <strong>consciousness<\/strong> remains one of the deepest mysteries of the universe and of our own existence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is happening in the neurosciences?
