{"id":62366,"date":"2025-10-20T21:29:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T19:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=62366"},"modified":"2025-10-20T21:29:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T19:29:08","slug":"pope-responds-to-nobel-without-faith-in-god-no-salvation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/10\/20\/pope-responds-to-nobel-without-faith-in-god-no-salvation\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope &#8220;Responds&#8221; to Nobel: \u00abWithout Faith in God, No Salvation\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-130230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/papa_nobel.webp\" alt=\"pope nobel salvation\" width=\"606\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i><strong>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai<\/strong>, the newly crowned Nobel laureate in literature, acknowledges humanity\u2019s longing for salvation despite his secular view. <strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> seems to respond: \u201cA land without faith means creatures without salvation.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An imaginary background dialogue about salvation between <strong>the Pope<\/strong> and the Nobel laureate <strong>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yesterday in St. Peter&#8217;s Square, before tens of thousands of faithful, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed seven men and women saints, stating without equivocation or reserve that <i>\u00ab<strong>without faith in God there is no salvation<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He did so while commenting on Jesus&#8217; question about faith and its disappearance from the world. <i>\u00abWhat would happen?\u00bb<\/i>, the Pope asked himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Listening to <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/homilies\/2025\/documents\/20251019-canonizzazioni.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the homily<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of <strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> we were reminded of the interview with <strong>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai<\/strong>, the new Nobel Prize winner in literature, in which, even starting from a secularized paradigm, he recognizes humanity&#8217;s aspiration to salvation and the clear observation that <i>\u00abwe are not able to save ourselves\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obviously the Pope <strong>did not have in mind<\/strong> Krasznahorkai&#8217;s words during the homily; however it is possible to imagine it as <strong>a possible response<\/strong> to a very honest and truthful reflection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Krasznahorkai: \u00abWe are not able to save ourselves\u00bb<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of Hungarian origin, <mark><strong>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai<\/strong><\/mark> is considered the greatest living Hungarian writer and one of the most important in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His novels, including <i>&#8220;The World Goes On&#8221;<\/i> and <i>&#8220;Satantango&#8221;<\/i>, have been praised also <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/it\/mondo\/news\/2025-10\/nobel-letteratura-laszlo-krasznahorkai-ungheria.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by <i>&#8220;Vatican News&#8221;<\/i><\/a><\/em><\/strong> for the <strong>ethical and spiritual inquiry<\/strong> within the disorder of the world, in which he questions the destiny of man, the end of the world and the possibility of good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although he does not write religious novels, his characters always live <strong>before the mystery<\/strong> of existence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This also emerges in the interview <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corrierefiorentino.corriere.it\/notizie\/cultura-e-tempo-libero\/25_ottobre_09\/il-nobel-per-la-letteratura-laszlo-krasznahorkai-non-siamo-in-grado-di-salvarci-e-abbiamo-bisogno-di-falsi-profeti-che-ci-mentano-ed1907a3-c5ad-457e-9b4e-2a38d1e0bxlk.shtml?refresh_ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with <i>&#8220;Corriere&#8221;<\/i><\/a><\/strong> a few days ago when the topic is <strong>the waiting for a savior<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abWhat else could we do? We <strong>are not able to save ourselves<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, Krasznahorkai comments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abFor a very, very, very long time we <strong>have not been waiting for prophets anymore<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, he continues, <i>\u00abbecause what we need are the <strong>false prophets<\/strong>. We need them to lie to us by saying that we have reasons to hope. That is what we need\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the biblical concept of <strong>false idols<\/strong>, those toward which man continually kneels <strong>hoping for salvation<\/strong>, for happiness. Success, money, sex, social recognition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead, Krasznahorkai comments, <i>\u00abwe know very well that we <strong>have no reason to hope<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>. And he concludes with a secular hymn: <i>\u00abWe pray to God and fear Evil. We never leave <strong>childhood<\/strong> behind. Above all, as adults, we are nothing but evil, depraved, miserable, losers, or bitterly victorious children\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although he denied faith as childish, the Nobel Prize winner in literature <strong>does not deny the need<\/strong> within himself, however vain, to be saved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One is reminded of that gospel passage in which <strong>John<\/strong> writes about Jesus Christ: <i>\u00abHe was in the world, and the world was made through him, and yet <strong>the world did not recognize him<\/strong>. He came among his own people, but <strong>his did not accept him<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i> (John 1:10-11).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Pope Leo XIV: \u00abWithout God there is no salvation\u00bb<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And it is here that yesterday&#8217;s homily of <mark><strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong><\/mark> fits in, which instead takes up the relationship with God as the only phenomenon that <i>\u00ab<strong>saves from nothing<\/strong> everything that ends in time\u00bb<\/i>. And he adds: <i>\u00abA land without faith would be populated by children who live without a Father, that is by <strong>creatures without salvation<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Without God, says Leo XIV, <i>\u00abthe sky and the earth would remain as before, but there would no longer be the <strong>hope<\/strong> in our hearts. Our desire for life would plunge into nothingness. Without faith in God, we cannot hope in <strong>salvation<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThe words of the Lord\u00bb<\/i>, the Pope concludes, <i>\u00abare a joyful announcement of <strong>salvation<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i> which <i>\u00abis the gift of eternal life that we receive from the Father, through the Son, with the power of the Holy Spirit\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A surprising convergence<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Who knows if <strong>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai<\/strong> will have listened to or seriously reflected on these words of Pope Leo XIV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two figures <strong>at the antipodes<\/strong> yet with an unexpected convergence: on one side, a Pope who reaffirms faith as <strong>the only gateway to salvation<\/strong>, on the other a writer who, while denying God, recognizes that <strong>man is not sufficient unto himself<\/strong> and therefore awaits an answer, a prophet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between the lucid despair of the Hungarian novelist and the certainty of the Pontiff a <strong>common space<\/strong> opens up: the recognition that salvation, far from being an invention for the weak, is the most human and reasonable cry there is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai, the newly crowned Nobel laureate in literature, acknowledges humanity\u2019s longing for salvation despite his secular view.
