{"id":62285,"date":"2025-10-09T14:44:02","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T12:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=62285"},"modified":"2025-10-09T14:53:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T12:53:14","slug":"this-iconic-photo-just-turned-75-years-old","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/10\/09\/this-iconic-photo-just-turned-75-years-old\/","title":{"rendered":"This Iconic Photo Just Turned 75 Years Old"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-129887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ukapaun.webp\" alt=\"jeep mass father kapaun\" width=\"610\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>The famous image of the venerable <strong>Father Emil Joseph Kapaun<\/strong>, a war hero in Korea. <strong>He saved 40 men<\/strong> and brought Christ into pain and injustice.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On <strong>October 7, 1950<\/strong> a young priest celebrated Mass improvising an altar <strong>on the hood of a muddy Jeep<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His name was <mark><strong>Father Emil Joseph Kapaun<\/strong><\/mark>, chaplain of the United States Army in Korea during the Second World War, dedicated to serving soldiers in the harshest conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the iconic scene that history left us, we see him dressed in priestly vestments but <strong>wearing boots full of mud<\/strong>, before him the soldier <strong>Patrick Schuler<\/strong> kneels and serves as his altar server.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An image <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/news\/father-emil-kapaun-jeep-mass-photo-75-years-later\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">etched<\/a><\/em><\/strong> into historical memory as the <strong>&#8220;Jeep Mass&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129888\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kapuan.webp\" alt=\"jeep mass father Emil Joseph Kapaun\" width=\"607\" height=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The War Hero Father Emil Joseph Kapaun<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During months of combat, Father Kapaun earned the reputation of a <strong>war hero<\/strong> by courageously serving the troops, aiding the wounded, recovering the fallen, assisting the living, administering baptisms to converts, hearing soldiers\u2019 confessions, and celebrating Mass in the most improbable places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His deeds are particularly remembered during the <strong>Battle of Unsan<\/strong> (North Korea), when 20,000 soldiers of the Chinese People\u2019s Volunteer Army (PVA) between November 1 and 2, 1950, attacked the United Nations regiment (Americans and South Koreans) where Father Kapaun was serving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite orders to retreat, the Catholic priest <strong>remained<\/strong> with the 800 men of the Battalion while the rest of the regiment withdrew. It was on that occasion that, defying enemy fire, he <strong>saved nearly 40 men<\/strong>, for which he was later awarded the <strong>Medal of Honor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On that occasion he was captured and imprisoned. He died on <strong>May 23, 1951<\/strong>, consumed by disease, cold, and hunger, but also by <strong>tireless dedication<\/strong> to his men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many survivors <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emil_Kapaun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recall<\/a><\/em><\/strong> how he <strong>kept hope alive<\/strong> even in the darkest moments, sharing what little he had.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In particular, he dug latrines, mediated disputes, <strong>smuggled food and medicine<\/strong> for dysentery, <strong>comforted the desperate<\/strong>, rejected communist indoctrination, and led prisoners in prayer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>He Brought Christ into the Madness of War<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the years, the photograph of the \u201cJeep Mass\u201d has become an <strong>emblem<\/strong> of faith that dares to reach even into the <strong>depths of war<\/strong>, among soldiers forced to kill their neighbor for the <strong>diabolical<\/strong> logic of power and the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In various places in the United States in recent days, <strong>celebrations on the hoods of vehicles<\/strong> have been organized recalling that gesture, and pilgrimages in memory of Father Kapaun, as a sign of gratitude for having brought God even where it seemed impossible to meet Him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/messe_jeep.webp\" alt=\"jeep mass Kapaun\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1993 <strong>John Paul II<\/strong> declared Father Emil Joseph Kapaun a Servant of God and, at the beginning of 2025, <strong>Francis<\/strong> declared him Venerable, a necessary step on the path to canonization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That image still speaks today because it embodies a word that transcends the barriers of time: <strong>the presence of Christ<\/strong> in the midst of pain and injustice, in the madness of <strong>war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The famous image of the venerable Father Emil J.
