It could be in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) where <strong>80,000<\/strong> people receive the Eucharist every Sunday and <strong>10,000 children<\/strong> attend catechism.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the glittering metropolis of <strong>Dubai<\/strong> there is an ecclesial reality that defies imagination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <mark><strong>St. Mary Parish of Dubai<\/strong><\/mark> could be <strong>the largest<\/strong> not only in the United Arab Emirates but in the entire world if one considers the number of people who participate in the Eucharist every weekend, often <strong>overflowing<\/strong> liturgical spaces to occupy courtyards or adjacent halls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond the official figures, it is <strong>the images<\/strong> that are impressive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/parrocchia_piu_grande1.webp\" alt=\"largest Church\" width=\"588\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Extraordinary Numbers<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When we talk about <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/going-out\/society\/dubai-church-prepares-to-celebrate-golden-jubilee-1.2000569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numbers<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, about <strong>80,000 people<\/strong> attend Mass every week, and on special occasions, the number can rise to 200,000 people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The numbers seem <strong>impossible<\/strong>, but if you consider that the current church can host <strong>2,000 worshippers<\/strong> and that around thirty Masses are celebrated just over the weekend, it becomes clear how such figures spread over an entire week can indeed be <strong>realistic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/news\/catholics-in-dubai-hidden-faith-solene-tadie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sources<\/a><\/strong><\/em> report that about <strong>200,000 consecrated hosts<\/strong> are distributed during festive shifts each week. This number might be exaggerated (we will verify).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Masses, as already mentioned, are celebrated <strong>every hour<\/strong> to meet growing demand and are held in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, French, Urdu, and Filipino.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The History of the World\u2019s Largest Church<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The pastor of St. Mary, <strong>Father Lennie JA Connully<\/strong>, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/going-out\/society\/dubai-church-prepares-to-celebrate-golden-jubilee-1.2000569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tells<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that in the 1960s the Catholic community in Dubai did not even have <strong>a church<\/strong> and was served by a priest from Bahrain. Mass was celebrated once a week at embassies or in their homes for groups of 10\u201315 people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Consecrated in 1989, the <strong>St. Mary Catholic Church<\/strong> of Dubai was created by expanding a smaller building until it assumed a central role in Dubai\u2019s Catholic life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today it is served by about <strong>15 resident priests<\/strong>, with the help of various temporary celebrants, volunteers and logistical structures that must liaise every week with civil authorities on matters of <strong>traffic and security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another priest explains to <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pillarcatholic.com\/p\/at-dubais-parish-catholics-find-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>The Pillar<\/i><\/a><\/em><\/strong> that about <strong>10,000 children<\/strong> are enrolled in the parish catechism program, of which 7,000 are in English and 3,000 in other languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And every month the pastors baptize <strong>hundreds of children<\/strong>, while at least <strong>two large weddings<\/strong> are held every 30 days often with a dozen couples at a time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is very nice what the pastor writes <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/saintmarysdubai.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the website<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of the mega-parish inviting people to contact him for any question and, addressing the parishioners, encouraging them to <i>\u201cput at the disposal <strong>your many talents<\/strong> in the service of your parish\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Catholics in the United Arab Emirates and us<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>United Arab Emirates<\/strong> allow religious practice in designated areas, but maintain <strong>tight control<\/strong> over ecclesial activity by prohibiting public evangelization and <strong>limiting<\/strong> visible signs such as bells or external crosses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nevertheless, the Catholic presence has increased significantly thanks to the immigration of workers and families from <strong>Asia, Africa and Europe<\/strong>: in 2020 it was estimated that 850,000 Christians \u2014 mostly Catholics \u2014 resided in the country, a significant percentage in a Muslim context.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Looking at this reality, it becomes obvious how sometimes we remain closed <strong>within our small geographic context<\/strong>, convinced that the life of the Church is exhausted in the parishes we know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These experiences instead show how Catholicism is literally <strong>universal<\/strong>, capable of gathering different peoples and languages under the same altar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where we see communities of <strong>a few hundred people<\/strong>, elsewhere faith sometimes takes the form of <strong>immense crowds<\/strong> who live the same Eucharist, albeit with completely different organizational and cultural challenges.
