Here is the summary.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first long interview as Pontiff of <mark><strong>Leo XIV<\/strong><\/mark> was released just a few hours ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We are not very fond of these <strong>communicative forms<\/strong> introduced by Pope Francis, considering the high risk of <strong>misinterpretations<\/strong> that an interview can generate compared to a more formal address.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In any case, in the volume <i>&#8220;Le\u00f3n XIV: ciudadano del mundo, misionero del siglo XXI&#8221;<\/i> (Penguin Per\u00fa 2025) <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">edited<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Elisa Ann Allen<\/strong>, the Pope touches on various topics ranging from the tragedy in Gaza to international politics, up to the internal challenges of the Church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On these, in particular, Leo XIV deals with <em><strong>Fiducia Supplicans<\/strong><\/em> and the <strong>Mass in Latin<\/strong>, as well as deaconesses and women&#8217;s ordination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The impression is the image of a Pope who, while aware of the expectations inside and outside the Church, chooses <strong>the language of prudence<\/strong> and responsibility, avoiding simplifications and slogans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below are <strong>the words he expressed<\/strong> on the main topics addressed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Gaza and the question of genocide<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leone XIV expresses deep concern for the suffering of the population in <strong>Gaza<\/strong>, especially for children: hunger, need for healthcare and humanitarian aid. He believes the situation is becoming unsustainable if action is not taken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the use of the term <strong>\u201cgenocide\u201d<\/strong> he points out instead that although the word is increasingly used even in international circles, the Holy See <i>\u00abdoes not believe\u00bb<\/i> at the moment that <i>\u00abit is possible to issue <strong>any official statement<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i> because the technical definition is currently debated among experts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This does not mean moral silence, but <strong>prudence<\/strong> in the use of words.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>United States, China, migrants<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Referring to the <strong>United States<\/strong>, he stressed that although being American, he does not intend to <i>\u00abget involved in partisan politics\u00bb<\/i> and has left it to the Church leadership in the United States to engage with President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, he does not fear addressing <strong>urgent issues<\/strong> with authorities when necessary, for example human dignity and the issue of <strong>migrants<\/strong>. After inviting a return to the <i>Letter<\/i> sent by <strong>Pope Francis<\/strong>, congratulating the bishops who are applying it, he emphasizes the need for state policies to reflect the principle of respect for the dignity of all people, <strong>regardless of where they are born<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On relations with <strong>China<\/strong>, Leone XIV wanted to distinguish himself for <strong>continuity<\/strong>: the Holy See&#8217;s policy will be that <i>\u00abfollowed for some years\u00bb<\/i>, without claiming to <i>\u00abbe wiser or more experienced\u00bb<\/i> than his predecessors. He is fully aware that many Chinese Catholics <i>\u00abhave lived some kind of oppression or difficulty in living their faith freely, and without choosing sides\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>LGBTQ+ identity<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the <strong>LGBTQ+<\/strong> issue, Leone XIV adopts Francis&#8217;s formula of <strong>universal welcome<\/strong>: <i>\u201ctodos, todos, todos\u201d. <\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While stating that <i>\u00abeveryone\u2019s invited in\u00bb<\/i>, he also clarified that <i>\u00abI don&#8217;t invite a person in because <strong>they are or are not any specific identity<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i> but because <i>\u00abthey are a son or daughter of God\u00bb<\/i>. And sexual identity should not be <i>\u00aba primary issue\u00bb<\/i> in the relationship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abWhat they call the <strong>traditional family<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, the Pope also affirms, <i>\u00abneed to be supported\u00bb<\/i>. The family is <i>\u00abfather, mother, and children\u00bb<\/i>, whose social role <i>\u00abhas to be recognized, strengthened\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, Leone XIV adds, <i>\u00abI find it <strong>highly unlikely<\/strong>, certainly in the near future, that the Church&#8217;s doctrine will change in terms of what the church teaches about sexuality, what the Church teaches about marriage\u00bb<\/i>, recalling that he has already spoken out <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2018\/08\/09\/papa-bergoglio-su-unioni-lgbtq-e-famiglia-tutti-i-discorsi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like his predecessor<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in favor of <i>\u00aba family composed <strong>of a man and a woman<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, <i>\u00abblessed in the sacrament of marriage\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Leo XIV on Fiducia Supplicans and the Mass in Latin<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Pope also speaks about <i>&#8220;<strong>Fiducia Supplicans<\/strong>&#8220;<\/i>, recalling that in Northern Europe they are already publishing <i>\u00abrituals of blessing \u2018people who love one another\u2019\u00bb<\/i> but <i>\u00abwhich <strong>goes specifically against<\/strong> that Pope Francis approved\u00bb<\/i>. This document, he clarifies, <i>\u00abbasically says, of course we can bless all people, but it doesn\u2019t look for a way of ritualizing some kind of blessing because that\u2019s not what the Church teaches\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This does not mean excluding people or labeling them as bad, <i>\u00abbut I think it&#8217;s very important, again, to accept people who make choices in their life and to respect them\u00bb<\/i>. And again: <i>\u00ab<b>The individuals<\/b> will be accepted and received\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Part of the interview is devoted to the issue of the <strong>Tridentine Mass<\/strong> which he describes as <i>\u00abburning\u00bb<\/i>, because some have used the liturgy as a <i>\u00ab<strong>political instrument<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <i>\u00abvery deplorable\u00bb<\/i> thing and for this he announces the possibility of <i>\u00ab<strong>sitting at a table<\/strong> with a group of people who support the Tridentine rite\u00bb<\/i>, in order to address the issue <i>\u00abwith synodality\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leone XIV nevertheless recognizes that <i>\u00abthe <strong>&#8220;abuse&#8221; of the liturgy<\/strong> by what we call the Vatican II Mass has not helped those seeking <strong>a deeper prayer experience<\/strong>, a contact with the mystery of faith that seemed to be found in the celebration of the Tridentine Mass\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stresses that if the <i>novus ordo<\/i> were celebrated <i>\u00ab<strong>appropriately<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i> there would not be <i>\u00abso much difference between this experience and that one\u00bb<\/i>, that is, with the Tridentine Mass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What wounds the Pope is the <strong>polarization<\/strong> of positions, so much so that he reports accounts of some bishops who tried to involve <strong>traditionalist<\/strong> figures who, however, <i>\u00abdo not even want to talk about it. This is a problem in itself. It means that now <strong>we are in ideology<\/strong>, we are no longer in the experience of ecclesial communion. This is one of the items on the agenda\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Leone XIV on deaconesses and women&#8217;s ordination<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for the role of <strong>women in the Church<\/strong>, the Pope is ready to <i>\u00abcontinue <strong>in the footsteps of Francis<\/strong> including in appointing women to some leadership roles at different levels in the Church\u2019s life\u00bb<\/i>, while maintaining the traditional teaching on the question of <strong>women deacons<\/strong> and women&#8217;s ordination: <i>\u00abI at the moment <b>don\u2019t have an intention of changing<\/b> the teaching of the Church on the topic\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He will nevertheless continue within the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith <i>\u00ab<strong>examine the theological background<\/strong>, history, of some of those questions, and we\u2019ll walk with that and see what comes\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>On sexual abuse<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Pontiff also addressed <strong>the sexual abuse crisis<\/strong>, calling it a <i>\u00abnot yet resolved\u00bb<\/i> issue, asking for <i>\u00abgreat respect\u00bb<\/i> for the victims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that <i>\u00abover <strong>90% of cases<\/strong> people who come forward with abuse allegations are telling the truth\u00bb<\/i>, while noting that there are <i>\u00abproven cases of some <strong>false accusations<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i> that have <i>\u00abdestroyed the lives\u00bb<\/i> of priests. And in any case, an accusation <i>\u00abdoes not take away the presumption of innocence\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alongside the defense of the <strong>victim<\/strong> and their protection, he therefore asks to also consider <strong>the protection and rights of the accused<\/strong> even if <i>\u00absaying so sometimes causes greater pain for the victims\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In any case, Leone XIV shifts the focus to the <i>\u00abvast <strong>majority of people<\/strong> who are committed to the church, priests, and bishops, religious\u00bb<\/i>, who <i>\u00abhave never abused anyone. So, <strong>we can&#8217;t make<\/strong> the whole church focus exclusively on this issue\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Other religions<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leone XIV explains the initiatives planned to continue <strong>the ecumenical path<\/strong>, particularly related to the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He talks about the relationship with <strong>Islam <\/strong>which <i>\u00abis not one reality either, so you can meet with one group, and you have other groups\u00bb<\/i>, that with <strong>Buddhism<\/strong> and with the <strong>Jewish community<\/strong>, which he sees <i>\u00abimproved a bit  in the first couple of months\u00bb<\/i> of his pontificate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Very significant is what the Pope says about asserting <strong>Christian identity first<\/strong> in order to open up to other religious experiences: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00ab<strong>I&#8217;m not afraid<\/strong> to say I believe in Jesus Christ and that he died on the cross and rose from the dead, and that we together are called to share that message.
