The Commemoration of the martyrs of the faith took place yesterday in Rome.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><mark>Pope Leo XIV<\/mark><\/strong> raises his voice for those who can no longer speak.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the <em>Commemoration of the Martyrs of the Faith of the 21st Century<\/em> held yesterday at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the Pontiff remembered the men and women who <strong>paid with their lives<\/strong> for fidelity to the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Leo XIV: &#8220;They will not silence the persecuted Christians&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThey can kill the body\u00bb<\/i>, he declared firmly, <i>\u00abbut <strong>no one will be able to silence their voice<\/strong> nor erase the love they have witnessed\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Truly pertinent words, an appeal not to remain indifferent. <i>\u00abWe cannot, we do not want to forget. We want to remember\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Leo XIV<\/strong> <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/homilies\/2025\/documents\/20250914-omelia-martiri.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evoked<\/a><\/em><\/strong> names and stories that should disturb consciences: <strong>Sister Dorothy Stang<\/strong>, gunned down in Brazil while defending the poor with the Bible in her hand; <strong>Father Ragheed Ganni<\/strong>, a Chaldean priest from Mosul, murdered along with his deacons; <strong>Francis Tofi<\/strong>, an Anglican pastor killed in the Solomon Islands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Ecumenism of Blood: Unity from Martyrdom<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not mere chronicles of blood, but seeds of hope, signs of <strong>a unity born from martyrdom<\/strong> which the Pope called <strong>\u201cecumenism of blood\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An expression made famous by <strong>Saint John Paul II<\/strong> and later often taken up by Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. It indicates a paradoxical and dramatic truth: persecutors <strong>do not care about confessional divisions<\/strong>, they do not ask whether the victim is Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In their eyes only the fact of being Christians matters, and for this reason they are <strong>struck without distinction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this sense, the blood of the martyrs becomes a common ground that <strong>precedes<\/strong> any theological dialogue. It is a communion that does not arise from negotiations or joint declarations, but from shared sacrifice. Christians belonging to different churches die together, united by the same fidelity to Christ.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Nigeria and the Physical and Social Persecutions<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, while Rome remembered the martyrs, news coming from <strong>Nigeria<\/strong> make those words timely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We refer to the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kathpress.at\/goto\/meldung\/2510891\/bischof-christen-in-nigeria-werden-nicht-nur-mit-waffen-verfolgt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complaint<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Bishop Habila Daboh<\/strong>, bishop of Zaria (Nigeria) issued during an event of <i>&#8220;Aid to the Church in Need&#8221;<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nigeria is, in fact, at the moment the place in the world where Christians are undergoing a <strong>daily martyrdom<\/strong>, but the bishop reveals that persecution does not occur only with weapons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And despite (or perhaps precisely because of) the fact that <i>\u00abChristians are <strong>growing astronomically<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, as <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avvenire.it\/chiesa\/pagine\/nigeria-nel-nord-islamico-i-cristiani-in-crescita-astronomica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/em><\/strong> a few months ago, penalizations against them are occurring with <strong>more subtle and insidious<\/strong> means: discrimination in education, access to work, recognition of rights, bans on building churches; forced marriages and kidnappings. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a strategy that literally aims to <strong>erase the Christian presence<\/strong> from the social fabric, reducing it to silence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pope Leo XIV&#8217;s warning is clear: that <strong>silence<\/strong> will never come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The strong admonition of Pope Leo XIV: no one forgets the persecuted Christians and no one will be able to silence their voice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":62102,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"iawp_total_views":14,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[1912,1911,1913],"class_list":["post-62101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-leo-xiv-persecuted-christians","tag-persecuted-christians","tag-vatican-persecuted-christians"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.6 -
