{"id":62093,"date":"2025-09-14T22:00:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=62093"},"modified":"2025-09-14T22:03:51","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:03:51","slug":"pope-a-living-theology-engaging-physics-biology-and-philosophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/09\/14\/pope-a-living-theology-engaging-physics-biology-and-philosophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope: A Living Theology Engaging Physics, Biology and Philosophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-128900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/leone_teologia_scienza.webp\" alt=\"leo xiv theology science\" width=\"606\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>Yesterday&#8217;s address by <strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> in which he invites theologians to a <strong>living and concrete theology<\/strong>, increasingly in dialogue with <strong>science and philosophy<\/strong>, embodied in human events.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> elaborated on the course in the relationship between <strong>faith and reason<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/speeches\/2025\/september\/documents\/20250913-seminario-pat.html target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday&#8217;s address<\/a><\/em><\/strong> to the seminary of the <strong>Pontifical Academy of Theology<\/strong>, he in fact asked theologians not only to know theology but to make it increasingly engage in dialogue with the sciences, such as <strong>physics and biology<\/strong>, so that religious reflection is <i>\u00ab<strong>incarnate<\/strong> in the concrete events of today&#8217;s humanity\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A fundamental emphasis that Pope Leo XIV obviously extended also to <strong>philosophy<\/strong>, the arts, music, the economic sciences, the legal sciences, <strong>literature<\/strong>, music, <i>\u00abto enrich and to be enriched by\u00bb<\/i> the whole human experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Theology and the challenges of science and philosophy<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is not rhetoric, but it answers <strong>a question that is now urgent<\/strong>: how can theology offer credible answers <strong>if it is completely detached<\/strong> from the challenges posed by other human forms of knowledge?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pope Leo XIV recalls figures such as Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Blessed Antonio Rosmini, who were able to <strong>combine faith and reason<\/strong>, abstract reflection and lived praxis, as models for a \u201csapiential theology\u201d that holds together intellectual rigor and spiritual experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Living and concrete theology to be credible<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In another significant passage, he develops the concept of <strong>&#8220;theology that goes forth\u201d<\/strong>, which <i>\u00abcombines scientific rigor with a passion for history; a theology therefore <strong>incarnate<\/strong>, steeped in the pains, joys, longings and hopes of the humanity of the women and men of our time\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is an invitation to theologians not to respond to <strong>abstract problems<\/strong>, but to be even more present to concrete questions: suffering, injustice, the loss of hope, but also to the <i>\u00abdigital challenges\u00bb<\/i>, those posed by Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And, speaking of challenges, generally to face calmly those created by <strong>scientific progress<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Friendship among theologians fosters encounter<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another appeal we highlight from yesterday&#8217;s intense address is Pope Leo XIV&#8217;s request that theology not be <strong>an individualistic activity<\/strong>, but the fruit of <i>\u00abencounter and <strong>friendship among theologians<\/strong>, a place of communion and sharing in which to walk together toward Christ\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, a theology founded on personal encounter, he adds, is capable of inserting itself <i>\u00abinto different cultures\u00bb<\/i> and being <strong>leaven for other encounters<\/strong>, such as those <i>\u00abwith believers of other religious faiths and with non-believers\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A clear intervention by the Pope exhorting theology not to get lost <strong>in abstract and hazy discourses<\/strong>, understandable only by a narrow circle of experts, but to deal with and take an interest, with the rigor of research, in the concrete problems of the world and of humanity.
