{"id":62039,"date":"2025-09-08T12:47:32","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T10:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=62039"},"modified":"2025-09-08T13:53:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T11:53:24","slug":"carlo-acutis-and-the-inconsistent-accusations-of-anti-semitism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/09\/08\/carlo-acutis-and-the-inconsistent-accusations-of-anti-semitism\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlo Acutis and the Inconsistent Accusations of Antisemitism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/carlo_acutis_miracoli_eucaristici.webp\" alt=\"carlo acutis eucharistic miracles\" width=\"608\" height=\"319\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>From <strong>Germany<\/strong> come accusations of anti-Semitism against <strong>Carlo Acutis<\/strong>: he allegedly highlighted even ancient <strong>Eucharistic miracles<\/strong> linked to accusations against Jews and the resulting persecutions.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can a young person like <strong><mark>Carlo Acutis<\/strong><\/mark> really be accused of anti-Semitism?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A story that emerged in recent days, coinciding with the <strong>canonization<\/strong> (together with Pier Giorgio Frassati) that took place yesterday at the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the background is a collection of <strong>108 Eucharistic miracles<\/strong> that Carlo Acutis, at just twelve years old, published on a website that later became famous: an archive that also included <strong>episodes from the past<\/strong> related to accusations of desecration <strong>blamed on Jews<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These accusations often led to <strong>violence and persecutions<\/strong> against Jewish communities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus <strong>Felix Klein<\/strong>, the German representative for the fight against anti-Semitism, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katholisch.de\/artikel\/62348-antisemitismusbeauftragter-kritisiert-heiligsprechung-von-carlo-acutis?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a><\/em><\/strong> the accusation against the Catholic Church of <strong>not adequately addressing<\/strong> the issue during the beatification and canonization process of Acutis, reopening a wound from the past.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The response of theologian Marco Bernini<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This has generated, especially in the German world, various accusations of <strong>anti-Semitism<\/strong>, strongly rejected by <strong><mark>don Marco Bernini<\/mark><\/strong>, professor of Liturgical Studies at the Theological Faculty of Trier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on the program &#8220;<em>Deutschlandfunk<\/em>&#8220;, Bernini <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.domradio.de\/artikel\/theologe-haelt-antisemitismusvorwurf-gegen-carlo-acutis-fuer-ueberzogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that these are <strong>totally inappropriate accusations<\/strong> because Carlo Acutis was not a historian but simply a boy who conducted personal research on the web about Eucharistic miracles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He never showed nor revealed <strong>any intention<\/strong> to spread stereotypes or blame Jews. Connections that Acutis probably <strong>completely ignored<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, the scholar added, the canonization that took place yesterday, <strong>September 7<\/strong>, does not concern the canonization of medieval Eucharistic miracles, but that <i>\u00abof a fifteen-year-old boy who collected them\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Carlo Acutis and Andrea Grillo&#8217;s criticisms<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bernini himself suggests that Carlo was <strong>an extraordinary fifteen-year-old<\/strong>, despite his normalcy, as he embodied an authentic passion for faith and the Eucharist. This should be the basis for judgments about him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently, we published (in Italian) <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2025\/07\/10\/carlo-acutis-risposta-pacata-al-teologo-andrea-grillo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on UCCR<\/a><\/em><\/strong> a detailed response to another critique received by Carlo Acutis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We refer to the words of theologian <strong>Andrea Grillo<\/strong>, according to whom adults close to Carlo would have conveyed to him an image of the Eucharist that was <strong>unbalanced<\/strong>, so much so that he spoke of <strong>\u201cEucharistic miseducation\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The theologian <strong>Father Maurizio Buioni<\/strong>, interviewed by us, responded to Grillo emphasizing that while it is <strong>correct to denounce<\/strong> the risk of a Eucharistic spirituality stuck on extraordinary signs, it is wrong to delegitimize popular piety and <strong>reduce holiness<\/strong> to an academic issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abCarlo was not a theologian, but a teenager <strong>in love with the Eucharist<\/strong>\u00bb<\/i>, wrote Don Buioni. <i>\u00abHis faith is not systematic, but experiential; not doctrinal, but affective.
