Nicole Oresme, without ever having seen it, reports a &#8220;they say that&#8221; the Shroud was used to deceive the faithful. <strong>Where is the news<\/strong>?<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nby <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2013\/08\/10\/uccr-editorial-staff-and-contributors\/#piana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alessandro Piana<\/a><\/b>*<br \/>\n*<i>scholar and international specialist on the Shroud<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the beginning of August, the <mark><strong>Shroud<\/strong><\/mark> has been under attack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First the study by <strong>Cicero Moraes<\/strong>, which <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/08\/03\/was-the-shroud-laid-on-a-sculpture-a-study-full-of-errors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we already discussed<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yesterday a preview in the Italian newspaper <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lastampa.it\/torino\/2025\/08\/28\/news\/sindone_falso_truffa_fedeli-15285599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>&#8220;La Stampa&#8221;<\/i><\/a><\/strong> of a publication in the journal <i>Journal of Medieval History<\/i>, which the Turin daily presented as follows: <i>&#8220;The University of Louvain has found in a medieval document the oldest testimony about the Shroud. It dates back to 1370 and confirms that <strong>already in the Middle Ages it was known<\/strong> that the relic was not authentic\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The news <strong>was picked up<\/strong> today by major international newspapers, such as <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/shroud-of-turin-new-evidence-fake-b2816240.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Independent<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What the new study on the Shroud says<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the study conducted by researcher <strong>Nicolas Sarzeaud<\/strong> of the Catholic University of Louvain, a passage from the <em>Problemata<\/em> of <strong>Nicole Oresme<\/strong>, a French theologian and philosopher of the 14th century, would prove that already in 1370 the Holy Linen was known as an artifact made to defraud the faithful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what are the real facts?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the review of an unpublished treatise by Nicole Oresme, the two researchers <strong>Alain Boureau<\/strong> and <strong>B\u00e9atrice Delaurenti<\/strong> highlighted a mention of the <strong>Shroud of Turin<\/strong>, written between 1350 and 1382 (probably after 1370), the date of Oresme\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to what Sarzeaud writes in his study, the interest would be to underline the <strong>existence<\/strong> of the Shroud of Turin about twenty years earlier than previously known: the well-known period of the Lirey Controversy (1389\u20131390), which <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2022\/04\/29\/autenticita-sindone-un-esperto-risponde-alle-obiezioni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has already been discussed<\/a><\/em><\/strong> on UCCR (in Italian).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In what way does this document enter specifically into the field of the Shroud?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For Sarzeaud, Nicole Oresme\u2019s approach is that of a <strong>rationalist <em>ante litteram<\/em><\/strong>, as can be inferred from this passage presented in the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThe originality of Oresme\u2019s position lies in his attempt to provide <strong>rational explanations<\/strong> for unexplained phenomena, whether miraculous or prodigious, rather than interpreting them as divine, demonic, or due to an \u201cunknown influence\u201d (influentia ignota). His is the epitome of a <strong>naturalistic approach<\/strong>, derived from the transformation of Scholasticism in the 13th century, which approached so-called magical phenomena such as miracles from a new perspective. However, this naturalistic approach was increasingly challenged in the mid-14th century, when magical practices and their demonological interpretations gained ground, justifying new methods of repression\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From this premise follows the presentation of the text with the reference to the Shroud, <strong>relegated to a bibliographical note<\/strong>, and which should be cited in full:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abI do not need to believe those who say: \u201cSo-and-so performed this or that miracle for me,\u201d because in this way many clerics deceive others, inducing them to bring offerings to their churches. This is clear from the example of the church in Champagne, <strong>where it was said that it was the Shroud<\/strong> of the Lord Jesus Christ, and from the seemingly endless number of others who have invented this or that\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the <strong>only<\/strong> reference to the Shroud!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Medieval Document on the Shroud? Just a &#8220;Rumor&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This fragment <strong>proves nothing<\/strong>, and does not say that <strong>Nicole Oresme<\/strong> ever saw the Shroud of Lirey directly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Somewhat <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2022\/04\/29\/autenticita-sindone-un-esperto-risponde-alle-obiezioni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as did<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <strong>Pierre d\u2019Arcis<\/strong>, Oresme also speaks by hearsay (<i>\u00abit was said that&#8230;\u00bb<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The short passage <strong>becomes the pretext<\/strong> in the study to recall the well-known bishop of Troyes, Pierre d\u2019Arcis, and his beliefs about the artificial fabrication of the Lirey cloth, as well as his extremely rational approach like that of the men of his time (for those who do not understand the reference we refer <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2022\/04\/29\/autenticita-sindone-un-esperto-risponde-alle-obiezioni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to a previous article<\/a><\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How the media invent evidence<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now it is only necessary to understand how a testimony based on <i>\u00abit was said that\u00bb<\/i> <strong>can corroborate<\/strong> the subtitle of the article published by the newspaper <i>La Stampa<\/i>: <i>\u00abConfirms that <strong>already in the Middle Ages it was known<\/strong> that the relic was not authentic\u00bb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The passage just quoted <strong>simply speaks<\/strong> of the possible (especially economic) deception perpetrated against the faithful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Without detracting from the importance of the direct study of historical documents, fundamental to the understanding of the past, <strong>where is the news<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That around 1370 there was a person who, by hearsay, considered the Shroud a forgery? And, in doing so, would be <strong>the second<\/strong> to leave testimony of his thought? The second, moreover, in an entire century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Step by step\u2014or rather, ten years at a time\u2014we will come to discover other authors who considered the Shroud a forgery <strong>without ever having seen it<\/strong>, but only by simple hearsay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The forger and the unrepeatability of the Shroud<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But if in the 21st century, with <strong>all the technology possible<\/strong> available and with an exorbitant number of scientific articles demonstrating the <strong>impossibility<\/strong> of reproducing the Shroud image, there are people who believe in the artificial and medieval origin of the artifact, should we really be concerned about a 14th-century commentator who speaks <strong>by hearsay<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here he comes again on the horizon: the <strong>medieval forger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <strong>phantom luminary<\/strong> of falsifications with foresight, who, though he could have become rich and famous thanks to his skill in creating still irreproducible images of the <i>Christus patiens<\/i> and in complete contradiction with the iconography of the time, instead of enjoying his skill and distributing fake relics throughout Christendom, decides to <strong>make only one copy<\/strong> to send to Lirey with the precise intent of making everyone gullible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Including us, almost 700 years later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the Middle Ages produced <strong>such a man<\/strong> capable of surpassing 21st-century technology, then we have not discovered the Shroud, but <strong>the greatest forgotten genius<\/strong> in history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Too bad that <strong>no one ever saw him<\/strong>, just as Nicole Oresme never saw the Shroud on which he doubted authenticity based on hearsay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Follow the author&#8217;s blog <b><i><mark><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/category\/alessandro-piana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SHROUD insights<\/a><\/mark><\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 1370 rumor from Nicole Oresme turned by the media into evidence against the Shroud.
