Charles-Michel de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e<\/strong> is the founder of modern <strong>sign language<\/strong>. He was the one who founded the first institute, investing his entire inheritance to give a voice to deaf children.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Who was the inventor of modern <strong><mark>sign language<\/strong><\/mark>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An essential means for nearly <strong>450 million people<\/strong> who are deaf worldwide, allowing them access to communication and social inclusion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It all began with the encounter of a French <strong>Catholic priest<\/strong> with two deaf twin sisters in 1760.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The inventor of sign language<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The priest\u2019s name was <strong><mark>Msgr. Charles-Michel de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e<\/strong><\/mark> and, moved by sincere compassion, he decided to invest his entire family inheritance in the first <strong>free public school<\/strong> for the hearing-impaired: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.injs-paris.fr\/page\/patrimoine-et-culture\/histoire-injs-paris\/personnalites-du-monde-de-la-surdite\/charles-michel-de-lespee-dit-labbe-de-lepee-1712-1789\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institut National de Jeunes Sourds<\/a> in Paris.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <strong>revolutionary school<\/strong> that marked a milestone in the education of the deaf, so much so that today the priest is recognized as a &#8220;<strong>benefactor of humanity<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To be precise, Msgr. de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e did not invent signs, he took those <strong>already spontaneously used<\/strong> by his students and codified and systematically organized them into what he called <em>&#8220;signes m\u00e9thodiques&#8221;<\/em>, or methodical signs, which reproduced French grammar in structured gestures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His system also aimed <strong>to include<\/strong> young deaf people in the Catholic faith: he was convinced in fact that access to the word would allow them to receive the sacraments and <strong>feel like active participants<\/strong> in the life of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The priests who carried on the legacy of Abb\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the death of Msgr. de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e in 1789, the baton passed to his successor, the French abb\u00e9 <strong>Roch-Ambroise Cucurron Sicard<\/strong>, who continued the work and expanded the institute, a model for the entire world. Abb\u00e9 Sicard\u2019s students in fact brought the method to the United States, where modern <i><strong>American Sign Language<\/strong><\/i> (ASL) was born, replacing Old French Sign Language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Italy, sign language arrived thanks to Abb\u00e9 <strong>Tommaso Silvestri<\/strong> in 1783, founder of the State Institute for the Deaf in Rome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not only priests, but also <strong>various nuns<\/strong> founded many of the first schools for the deaf worldwide. Some followed the sign-based method, others the oral approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2025, in the <strong>United States<\/strong>, hundreds of deaf Catholics gathered <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deafcathnyc.org\/events-2\/eucharistic-congress-catholic-deaf-community-april-5-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at a congress<\/a><\/em><\/strong> from April 4 to 6, organized by the (deaf) priest <strong>Fr. Mike Depcik<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The history of sign language in fact predates Abb\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e and goes back to the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>, when the Spanish monk <strong>Melchor de Yebra<\/strong> documented a manual alphabet used by monks and employed it to instruct the deaf.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1620 the priest <strong>Juan Pablo de Bonet<\/strong> published a work that included a structured manual alphabet, allowing the association of finger movements with letters and sounds. This text is considered the first systematic European contribution to the study and teaching of the hearing-impaired.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The work of Catholic schools<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We allow ourselves <strong>a parallel<\/strong> that may seem unrelated at first glance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In recent years millions of people have <strong>cried scandal<\/strong> over the presence of mass graves in Canadian <strong>residential schools<\/strong>, which <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2025\/06\/14\/il-canada-ferma-le-indagini-niente-prova-delle-fosse-comuni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turned out<\/a><\/em><\/strong> to be one of the greatest <strong>hate hoaxes<\/strong> of all time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was nonetheless an opportunity to <strong>condemn Catholic educational methods<\/strong> present in those schools, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2022\/04\/01\/nessun-genocidio-nelle-scuole-residenziali-parla-lo-storico-canadese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defended<\/a><\/em><\/strong> however by the natives themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But why does no one talk about the enormous educational work of the Church and about what it has <strong>actually built<\/strong> in centuries of educational and social service through its schools and institutes?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like those for <strong>the deaf<\/strong>, thanks to pioneers such as Abb\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00c9p\u00e9e. Thousands of children excluded from society found education, dignity and rights thanks to Catholic schools, almost always free of charge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is always striking to note how <strong>accusations<\/strong>, even without evidence, make the news, while <strong>the real good<\/strong> and documented is systematically ignored.
