{"id":61887,"date":"2025-08-23T00:21:28","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T22:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=61887"},"modified":"2025-08-23T00:21:28","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T22:21:28","slug":"poland-remains-the-leader-in-europe-for-religious-vocations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2025\/08\/23\/poland-remains-the-leader-in-europe-for-religious-vocations\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland Remains the Leader in Europe for Religious Vocations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-128049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/polonia_vocazioni.webp\" alt=\"poland vocations\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>A well-rooted <strong>popular faith<\/strong>, but also tied to the Church\u2014perhaps this is the <strong>secret<\/strong>? <strong>Poland<\/strong> leads Europe in the number of vocations, with a brief focus also on the political situation.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><mark><strong>Poland<\/strong><\/mark> remains the European leader in Catholic <strong>priestly vocations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <strong>2025<\/strong>, in fact, the country <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekai.pl\/kosciol-w-polsce-w-2025-roku-bedzie-mial-206-nowych-ksiezy-diecezjalnych-i-zakonnych\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counts<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <strong>206 new priests<\/strong> ordained, including 141 for the diocesan priesthood and 67 linked to religious orders. It is the highest number in Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although there is also a <strong>slight decline<\/strong> (153 ordinations in 2024 compared to 141 in 2025), Poland maintains an enviable <strong>stability<\/strong> compared to all other European countries, the result of a strong and well-rooted Catholic identity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Politics in Poland: not exactly a monolith<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We have always preferred objective data to opinions, and we see this as <strong>a clear message<\/strong> to many Catholics who look with <strong>condescension<\/strong> at popular forms of faith, such as the Polish ones, considered too &#8220;traditional.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One should not, however, complain about the <strong>vocations crisis<\/strong> that has for years struck our continent, pushing it to become more and more a land of mission for priests from other continents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, as in other countries, in Poland too there are <strong>the same political tensions<\/strong> between &#8220;right&#8221; and &#8220;left,&#8221; and these also involve local ecclesiastical leaders. It is difficult to see this so-called <strong>&#8220;conservative monolith&#8221;<\/strong> that some speak of.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To use media labels, at present Poland is led by the coexistence of the &#8220;pro-European&#8221; identity of Prime Minister <strong>Donald Tusk<\/strong> and the &#8220;ultra-conservative&#8221; identity of the new president <strong>Karol Nawrock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within the Church, however, recently <strong>Card. Grzegorz Rys<\/strong> of Lodz <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.examiner.org.hk\/2025\/07\/25\/polands-government-clashes-with-bishops-over-migration\/news\/international\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intervened<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, calling for a &#8220;conversion of language&#8221; after <strong>two retired bishops<\/strong> had sparked outrage with statements on migration and border policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>same dynamics<\/strong> as in many other states, Italy included.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Catholic vitality of Poland: the case of Tarn\u00f3w<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Focusing instead on the <strong>vitality of faith<\/strong> in Poland, it is also demonstrated by <strong>other data<\/strong> beyond that of vocations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2023\/09\/29\/proportion-of-catholics-in-poland-falls-to-71-new-census-data-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a><\/em><\/strong> census, <strong>71.4%<\/strong> of the population identified as Roman Catholic and\u2014despite a decline compared to the past\u2014even sacramental observance <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2023\/12\/19\/church-attendance-in-poland-rose-after-pandemic-but-remains-well-below-pre-covid-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">persists<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, with <strong>30%<\/strong> of Catholics attending Mass weekly and approaching the sacraments, such as confession.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within this context, the <strong>diocese of Tarn\u00f3w<\/strong> stands out as a true excellence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With <strong>13<\/strong> new priests ordained in 2025, it leads the <strong>national ranking<\/strong> for the number of vocations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A strength rooted in history: once part of Austrian Galicia, today Tarn\u00f3w preserves a strong spirituality and a <strong>bond with its bishop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A key figure in this process was Archbishop <strong>Leon Wal\u0119ga<\/strong> (1901\u20131931) who, thanks to Marian devotion to Our Lady of Tuch\u00f3w and the involvement of the Redemptorists, initiated a tradition that still today inspires priestly vocations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The annual pilgrimage to Tuch\u00f3w, attended also by <strong>many religious<\/strong> to counter what has been <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fides.org\/it\/news\/73876-EUROPA_POLONIA_Preti_e_vescovi_della_diocesi_di_Tarnow_in_pellegrinaggio_al_santuario_di_Tuchow_per_rinnovare_lo_slancio_missionario_e_vincere_le_insidie_dell_accidia_sacerdotale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defined<\/a><\/em><\/strong> as \u201cpriestly sloth,\u201d confirms the strong bond of the diocese with the territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The diocese of Tarn\u00f3w has long also represented a <strong>missionary outlet<\/strong>, with priests sent to serve in Western Europe, the United States, and mission territories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-128049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/tarnow_polonia.webp\" alt=\"poland tarnow\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whatever people may say, what is happening in <strong>Poland<\/strong> is a <strong>model<\/strong> of hope for old Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A community able to generate <strong>new vocations<\/strong> thanks to a lived faith, a rooted religious culture, and an ecclesial experience tied to the people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A well-rooted popular faith, but also tied to the Church\u2014perhaps this is the secret?
