Historian <strong>Massimo Bucciantini<\/strong> weighs in.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2022, the publishing house <strong>Morcelliana<\/strong> launched the series <i>&#8220;Library of Religious Scientists&#8221;<\/i>, dedicated to the writings of Piarist, Benedictine, and Jesuit scholars produced between the 17th and 18th centuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A rich testimony to the <strong>philosophical and scientific ferment<\/strong> within religious orders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Interest in science in monasteries<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/20220130sole24ore.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted<\/a><\/strong> by historian <strong>Massimo Bucciantini<\/strong>, professor of the History of Science at the University of Siena, noting with appreciation that <i>\u201cit shows us how <strong>wide-ranging and extensive<\/strong> the interest in science was within <strong>religious orders<\/strong> during the first great scientific revolution.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The series begins with the writings of the Jesuit from Brescia, <strong>Francesco Lana Terzi<\/strong> (1631\u20131687), founder of aeronautical science. Then comes <strong>Benedetto Castelli<\/strong> (1577\/78\u20131643), a renowned Benedictine mathematician, loyal disciple of Galileo, and author of the first modern treatise on hydrodynamics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The third author is <strong>Carlo Barletti<\/strong> (1735\u20131800), a member of the Piarists, best known as the predecessor of Alessandro Volta in the chair at the University of Pavia, overlooking\u2014as Bucciantini writes\u2014<i>\u201chow significant his contributions were to the field of study of the \u2018electric fire\u2019 at work in nature, namely electricity.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The final figure to open the series is the Piarist monk <strong>Father Giovanni Battista Beccaria<\/strong>, who corresponded regularly with Benjamin Franklin and was one of the leading \u201celectricians\u201d of the era.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Support for Galileo within the religious orders<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alongside the already mentioned Castelli, the Jesuit <strong>Bonaventura Cavalieri<\/strong>, and the Carmelite <strong>Paolo Foscarini<\/strong>, many of these \u201cnatural philosophers\u201d were outspoken supporters of <strong>Galileo Galilei<\/strong> in his disputes with Aristotelian philosophers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Pope\u2019s astronomers<\/strong>\u2014in particular, the Jesuits of the Roman College led by the celebrated Christophorus Clavius (1537\u20131612)\u2014received Galileo\u2019s discoveries with objectivity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No one within the ecclesiastical world or the Church openly challenged <strong>Galileo<\/strong> over his <strong>pro-Copernican theories<\/strong> (even though the Copernican system had not yet been proven at the time), not even <strong>Pope Paul V<\/strong>, who in fact received Galileo with great honour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Galileo\u2019s <i>&#8220;Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems&#8221;<\/i> was published thanks to the Dominican <strong>Niccol\u00f2 Riccardi<\/strong>, Master of the Sacred Palace and papal theologian, <i>\u201cwho looked favourably on Galileo\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"><b>C. Black<\/b>, <i>Storia dell&#8217;Inquisizione in Italia<\/i>, Carrocci Editore 2013, p. 430<\/span>, notes <b>Christopher Black<\/b>, emeritus professor of Italian History at the University of Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Dominican <strong>Raffaello Visconti<\/strong>, consulted by Riccardi, also gave a favourable opinion. Further approval came from priest <strong>Giovanni Ciampoli<\/strong>, secretary for papal correspondence and member of the Accademia dei Lincei, who <i>\u201cboasted a long friendship with both Galileo and the Barberini family\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\"><b>C. Black<\/b>, <i>Storia dell&#8217;Inquisizione in Italia<\/i>, Carrocci Editore 2013, pp. 430, 431<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cGalileo,\u201d<\/i> Black further observed, <i>\u201cenjoyed for several decades the help and support (not always acknowledged) of the leading Jesuit mathematicians\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\"><b>C. Black<\/b>, <i>Storia dell&#8217;Inquisizione in Italia<\/i>, Carrocci Editore 2013, p. 448<\/span>, and also found backing from <i>\u201chighly prominent cardinals such as <strong>Bellarmine<\/strong> and <strong>Maffeo Barberini<\/strong> (until he felt personally offended in 1631\u201332, when he had become Pope Urban VIII)\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\"><b>C. Black<\/b>, <i>Storia dell&#8217;Inquisizione in Italia<\/i>, Carrocci Editore 2013, p. 459<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among others, the English historian concluded, <i>\u201ceven the Pope\u2019s nephew, <strong>Cardinal Francesco Barberini<\/strong>, sympathised with Galileo\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\"><b>C. Black<\/b>, <i>Storia dell&#8217;Inquisizione in Italia<\/i>, Carrocci Editore 2013, p. 468<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The Church and the Galileo affair: a political issue<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then, <strong>between Galileo and Urban VIII<\/strong>, relations soured and events took the course we all know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But <strong>how is this possible<\/strong> if the Pisan scientist was so widely supported by many scientists belonging to religious orders, very close to the Pope?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though it provoked the ire of <i>Il Foglio<\/i>, we discussed this <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2025\/07\/04\/chiesa-vs-scienza-il-foglio-replica-a-uccr-usando-vecchi-cliche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some time ago<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, citing the work of <strong>Ada Palmer<\/strong>, professor of Modern European History at the University of Chicago, who stated that <i>\u201cif you read the actual trial documents of Galileo, <strong>science<\/strong> is hardly mentioned\u2014it was marginal.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is echoed by <strong>Ronald Naylor<\/strong>, philosopher of science at the University of Greenwich, and <strong>Russell Stannard<\/strong>, emeritus professor of Physics at the Open University:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cIt was <strong>a matter of politics<\/strong> and wounded personal feelings, not a fundamental rift between science and religion. <strong>The Galileo affair<\/strong> could easily have been avoided had the situation been handled differently on both sides.\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61733-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\"><b>R.
