Jesuit priest and director of the Vatican Observatory, Guy\u202fConsolmagno<\/strong><\/mark>, opens up in a rare interview with a German news portal.<\/p>\n

Thanks to his role as the “Pope\u2019s astronomer”, he is one of the world\u2019s leading authorities<\/strong> representing the union of science and faith.<\/p>\n

The Pope\u2019s Astronomer: Between Science and Faith<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Faith, he says, gives him the confidence<\/strong> to devote himself passionately to scientific research, while science<\/strong> provides valuable tools for a deeper understanding of faith.<\/p>\n

It’s not about replacing one with the other, but rather about using both<\/strong> to seek truth and beauty in creation.<\/p>\n

“And the more science tells me how this wonderful universe<\/strong> works,”<\/i> he tells Katholisch.de<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, “the more I can admire its wonderful Creator<\/strong>.”<\/i><\/p>\n

Are We Alone in the Universe? Not From Scripture<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The discussion ventures into a fascinating topic: the possible existence of extraterrestrial life<\/strong><\/mark>. We recently covered the subject<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, explaining that discovering life elsewhere in the universe would not undermine human uniqueness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re pleased to hear that Father Consolmagno<\/strong> feels the same way, pointing out that “nothing in our faith or in Scripture contradicts<\/strong> the idea that there might be other creatures who have a relationship with God.”<\/i><\/p>\n

The belief that humans are unique in the universe<\/strong> is neither a Catholic nor a Christian concept. In fact, “it doesn\u2019t come from Scripture<\/strong>“<\/i>, the Pope\u2019s astronomer clarifies. “It\u2019s one of many naive ideas promoted by Renaissance philosophers.”<\/i><\/p>\n

As for the actual presence<\/strong> of extraterrestrial life, statistical probability may argue against it, yet “the universe could be teeming with life<\/strong>, or we could be alone<\/strong>.”<\/i><\/p>\n

The Jesuits of the Observatory and Their Role in Science<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The final topic of the interview touches on the Church\u2019s role<\/strong> in scientific research, and in particular, the astronomical work carried out at the Vatican Observatory sends a strong message.<\/p>\n

The 12 Jesuit scientists<\/strong> working at the Vatican come from all over the world. The Pope\u2019s astronomer describes their contribution as follows:<\/p>\n

“We\u2019ve earned doctorates from the same universities as our scientific colleagues, we publish with them in the same journals<\/strong>, and we\u2019re active in the same scientific organizations. We serve as peer reviewers<\/strong> for all the major science journals, and we hold positions within the International Astronomical Union and other organizations, such as the American Astronomical Society.”<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Just a few weeks ago, two Vatican astronomers, Father Gabriele Gionti<\/strong> and Don Matteo Galaverni<\/strong>, put forward<\/a><\/em><\/strong> a new model of gravity.<\/p>\n

Back in 2022, they announced<\/a><\/em><\/strong> the discovery of two celestial objects<\/strong> within the solar system, and previously, made headlines<\/a><\/em><\/strong> for their new mathematical insight into the beginning of the universe\u2014one that, in a sense, even “surpassed” Albert Einstein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
