This is discussed by the rector of the Ouagadougou seminary, explaining how training takes place and the danger posed by <strong>Islamist terrorism<\/strong>.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vocational crisis: <strong>there are too many!<\/strong> The number of seminarians is so high that there is no more room in the seminaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is what is happening in <strong><mark>Burkina Faso<\/strong><\/mark>, in West Africa, and if we think about almost empty seminaries in Italy, it\u2019s a truly strange scenario to imagine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Burkina Faso: No Room in the Seminaries<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cWe have divided the rooms of the seminary into small units separated by partitions to accommodate them,\u201d<\/i> <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/acninternational.org\/vocations-grow-in-burkina-faso-despite-terrorism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <strong>Father Guy Moukassa Sanon<\/strong> to the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Father Sanon is the rector of the <strong>Major Seminary of Saints Peter and Paul<\/strong> in Kossoghin, a village on the outskirts of the capital, <strong>Ouagadougou<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Indeed, if one visits the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100080586812753&amp;locale=it_IT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seminary&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, they will notice the <strong>great vitality<\/strong> of the activities and the active participation of the seminarians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the <strong>creation of new rooms<\/strong> within the seminary, the rector continued, <i>\u201cthese conditions are far from ideal for their studies and, moreover, <strong>they are still insufficient<\/strong>. For this reason, we have been forced to accommodate 22 seminarians elsewhere and send another 11 to a seminary in Mali.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Priestly Formation and the Reasons Behind Vocations<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The greatest concern of the trainers is ensuring that future priests <i>\u201ccan give an authentic testimony of their faith\u201d<\/i> and that they <i>\u201chave a true personal encounter with Christ, with the Gospel as their food and passion.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rector also mentions that for the <strong>Christmas holidays<\/strong>, many young men remained at the seminary because returning home would have meant putting their lives at risk. It has already happened in previous years that some were killed: almost 40% of the young men come from dioceses in the \u201cred zone,\u201d the areas severely affected by <strong>Islamic terrorism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nevertheless, the number of seminarians in the country continues to rise. Just in the Ouagadougou seminary, the number of future priests has grown from <strong>254<\/strong> in the 2019-2020 academic year to <strong>281<\/strong> in 2024-2025. Many of them have Muslim parents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But why are so many young Burkinabe discovering a priestly vocation?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the seminary rector, <strong>the Catholic Church in Burkina Faso<\/strong> is acting in a productive and credible manner, and it is very likely that these young men <strong>encounter people<\/strong> in their lives who can <i>\u201ctestify to the love of Christ in a clear and evident way.\u201d<\/i> The awakening of a vocation is also easier there than <i>\u201cin a materialistic context where nothing is expected from God.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In our view, a major factor is that faith, and even life itself, <strong>are not taken for granted<\/strong>. Christian persecution is strong in Burkina Faso, where terrorist groups often kill people indiscriminately, whether they are Muslim or Christian. At other times, they aim to <strong>impose Sharia law<\/strong>, directly targeting Christians.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Terrorism in Burkina Faso and Hatred Towards Christians<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who decide to be Christian do so every day, putting their lives at risk, <strong>faith is embodied in daily life<\/strong> and is not culturally reduced to an inherited habit, as in the West, where the risk of considering it <strong>&#8220;obvious&#8221;<\/strong> no longer allows it to touch existence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 2015, Burkina Faso, which is about 25% Christian, has become a <strong>hotbed of Islamic extremism<\/strong> and priests have increasingly become targets of terrorists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For this reason, the 2024 Christmas campaign of <strong>Aid to the Church in Need (ACN)<\/strong> focused on supporting Burkinabe Christians.
