A new academic study analyzing the inventories of the <strong>Vatican Chapter<\/strong> suggests that the origins of capitalism date back as early as the 1300s.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><mark>The origins of capitalism<\/strong><\/mark>? In Rome, during the Catholic Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Capitalism<\/strong> was far from being a secondary element in the rise of Western civilization. Indeed, even <strong>Karl Marx<\/strong> acknowledged that capitalism <i>\u201ccreated more massive and colossal forces than all previous generations put together\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"><b>K. Marx<\/b>, <i>The Communist Manifesto<\/i>, 1848<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, in popular culture, Max Weber&#8217;s thesis that capitalism originated with the <strong>Protestant Reformation<\/strong> is still prevalent. However, in academic circles, the situation is quite different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is highlighted once again by a highly academic and specialized text (not exactly aimed at the general public) authored by <strong><mark>Etienne Hubert<\/mark><\/strong>, a senior member of the French National Centre for Scientific Research and a former director of the Paris School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The book is titled <i><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.viella.it\/libro\/9791254694862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anatomy of a Document: Writing the Houses of St. Peter in the Vatican in the Mid-14th Century<\/a><\/strong><\/i> (Viella, 2024). It examines the development of <strong>administrative writing in ecclesiastical settings<\/strong> and the rational management of land and real estate in the medieval economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The Study on the Vatican Chapter&#8217;s Inventories<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hubert specifically analyzes the inventories of the <strong>Chapter of St. Peter<\/strong>, established in the 11th century to ensure the liturgical and sacramental care of <strong>St. Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/strong> in the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The study of <strong>inventories<\/strong> has become an area of increasing interest among modern historians as it sheds light on the administration of ecclesiastical and secular properties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Historian <strong>Marina Montesano<\/strong>, a professor at the University of Messina, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/ilmanifesto.it\/giubileo-linventario-del-vaticano-per-quello-del-1350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that the author focuses particularly on a <strong>1350 inventory<\/strong> compiled during the second Jubilee of 1350.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The document recorded both <strong>movable and immovable assets<\/strong>, but it also projected <strong>future economic trends<\/strong>. This approach, as the French researcher Hubert points out, reflects the <strong>innovative character<\/strong> of the Vatican Chapter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The French scholar highlights two main ways in which the Vatican Chapter acquired real estate: through <strong>donations and legacies<\/strong>, and via <strong>investment purchases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding testamentary donations, over <strong>100 houses<\/strong> in Rome were bequeathed to the Chapter between the late 13th and early 15th centuries. This ensured the Chapter not only a vast <strong>geographical distribution<\/strong> of its properties but also remarkable capabilities in economic administration and management.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>The Origins of Capitalism in the Middle Ages<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Marina Montesano rightly asks: <i>\u201cShould our understanding of the <strong>origins of capitalism<\/strong> become broader?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is precisely the argument of the renowned American sociologist <strong>Rodney Stark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As previously mentioned (and also highlighted in a <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2024\/11\/29\/federico-rampini-meriti-e-demeriti-di-grazie-occidente\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent review<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of Federico Rampini\u2019s latest book), the widely popular thesis of German sociologist <strong>Max Weber<\/strong>\u2014that Western capitalism derived from the Protestant Reformation\u2014is largely <strong>discredited<\/strong> in academic circles, even if it persists at the popular level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One reason for this misconception, according to Stark (himself not a Catholic), lies in the <strong>Catholic Counter-Reformation<\/strong>. He wrote that <i>\u201cthe new emphasis on asceticism\u201d<\/i> appeared to position the Church against commerce and banking systems, leading to the erroneous claim that Protestantism birthed capitalism. In reality, <i>\u201ccapitalism was already fully developed in Europe centuries before Luther was born\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\"><b>R. Stark<\/b>, <i>The Triumph of Christianity<\/i>, Lindau, 2012, pp. 429, 430<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As early as the <strong>9th century<\/strong>, monastic estates were engaged in advanced commercial activities that <i>\u201cgenerated a sophisticated banking system within a developing free market, thus giving rise to capitalism in all its glory\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\"><b>R. Stark<\/b>, <i>The Triumph of Christianity<\/i>, Lindau, 2012, p. 321<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Supporting the <strong>medieval origins of capitalism<\/strong>, <strong>Lester K. Little<\/strong>, professor emeritus of medieval history at Smith College, observed that by the 13th century, <strong>all major Catholic theologians<\/strong> had already extensively discussed <i>\u201cthe principal aspects of emerging capitalism\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Their discussions reflected <i>\u201cgenerally <strong>favorable conceptions<\/strong>, in stark contrast to attitudes that had dominated for six or seven centuries prior\u201d<\/i><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000323c0000000000000000_61471-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\"><b>L.K.
