Creator of The Lord of the Rings, for years there have been calls for his <strong>beatification<\/strong>. Here are the latest updates.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In recent years, discussions have arisen about the possible beatification of <strong><mark>J.R.R. Tolkien<\/strong><\/mark>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A renowned British writer and philologist, his fame is tied to masterpieces such as <i>The Hobbit<\/i> and <i><strong>The Lord of the Rings<\/strong><\/i>. These works, which revolutionized international literature, remain among the best-selling and most-translated books worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After his death, his son Christopher published other essential works, including <i><strong>The Silmarillion<\/strong><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Tolkien and his Catholic life<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tolkien was a devout Catholic<\/strong>, attending daily Mass and holding a profound devotion to the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1953, writing to Jesuit Robert Murray, he described <i><strong>The Lord of the Rings<\/strong><\/i> as <i>\u201ca fundamentally Catholic work.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His eldest son, <strong>John<\/strong>, was ordained a <strong>priest<\/strong>, reflecting the strong spiritual influence within his family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In several letters, <strong>Tolkien<\/strong> emphasized the importance of the <strong>Eucharist<\/strong> as a remedy to strengthen faith. In a 1941 letter to his son Michael, he described the <strong>Holy Sacrament<\/strong> as a source of <i>\u201ccharm, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all loves upon earth,\u201d<\/i> a passage quoted by <strong>Pope Francis<\/strong> <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2023\/12\/24\/0912\/01991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2023<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tolkien translated the <em><strong>Ave Maria<\/strong><\/em> and <em>Sub tuum praesidium<\/em> into <em><strong>Quenya<\/strong><\/em>, the constructed language of Arda, the fantasy universe he created. Moreover, he <strong>took inspiration from the Madonna<\/strong> to shape the character of <strong>Galadriel<\/strong> in <i>The Lord of the Rings<\/i>. His Marian devotion is evident in both his works and personal life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Efforts for Tolkien&#8217;s beatification<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Various groups have long promoted the <strong>cause for beatification<\/strong> of JRR Tolkien.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2015, <strong>Father Daniele Ercoli<\/strong> from Turin and several Catholic associations petitioned Archbishop <strong>Bernard Longley<\/strong> to initiate the process. They received a <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2015Tolkien.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive yet inconclusive response<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A 2018 conference in Oxford did not yield tangible results.
