The personal journey of the Argentine mathematician.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Argentine mathematician <strong><mark>Gregory Chaitin<\/mark><\/strong> is the latest addition to our highly popular <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/2010\/12\/08\/scienziati-credenti-cristiani-e-cattolici-elenco-completo\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">list<\/a><\/strong> of famous <strong>believing scientists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An honorary professor of Mathematics at the University of Buenos Aires and the Computer Science department at the University of Auckland (New Zealand), Chaitin is one of the <strong>most revolutionary figures<\/strong> in modern mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Gregory Chaitin, the Omega Number, and the Mathematical God<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His most significant contribution is the introduction of the <strong>Omega number<\/strong> concept (<i>In Pursuit of Omega<\/i>, Adelphi 2017), demonstrating the insurmountable limits of our ability to predict and calculate, and that, in mathematics, <strong>some truths are valid but not provable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His work has often brought him <strong>close to the mystery<\/strong>, to the unknowable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As early as 1990, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg12517094-200-a-random-walk-in-arithmetic-god-not-only-plays-dice-in-physics-but-also-in-pure-mathematics-mathematical-truth-is-sometimes-nothing-more-than-a-perfect-coin-toss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in <i>New Scientist<\/i><\/a><\/em><\/strong>, he wrote that <i>\u00ab<strong>God not only plays dice<\/strong> in physics but also in mathematics.\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He has frequently spoken of the &#8220;Programmer-God,&#8221; the &#8220;Mathematical-God,&#8221; and the concepts of <strong>randomness and purpose<\/strong> as being outside the scientific method.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Our Video on Gregory Chaitin<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only recently, however, has Chaitin appeared to undergo <strong>a personal journey<\/strong> of spiritual closeness, transitioning from the <strong><i>god<\/i> of mathematicians<\/strong> and Kurt G\u00f6del to one more approachable and encounterable, as revealed in Christianity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was hinted at in a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/godelian-letters\/interview-with-gregory-chaitin-b4e63460c94b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 interview<\/a><\/em>, but especially in a <strong>video interview<\/strong> that we have published (in English) on our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@UCCR_online\/featured\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new YouTube channel<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/klJwqwUp6gQ?si=A1Q8saBip7QkCOsR\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2>Chaitin&#8217;s Journey Toward a &#8220;Close God&#8221;<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chaitin&#8217;s words in the video<\/strong> are particularly striking, especially when he states:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u00abThere are moments of enlightenment that occur when doing mathematics. Moments <strong>when you feel closer to God<\/strong>, where you suddenly feel you understand, you see the beauty, you see what is really happening. It\u2019s like being on top of a mountain. I have a friend who climbed in Chile, where the mountains are spectacular, and he told me about reaching the summit of a snow-covered volcano. The sky was incredibly blue, and he broke into tears. It was like being <strong>in the presence of God<\/strong>, to use a word that\u2019s unpopular today. It\u2019s like a religious experience, and those are the moments that <strong>give meaning to everything<\/strong>. Why suffer and labor to understand something if you don\u2019t have those moments of clarity? These are the moments, a spiritual person would say, that bring you closer to God.\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These are <strong>new concepts for Chaitin<\/strong>. It\u2019s clear he has undergone a transformation. From the sterile &#8220;Programmer-God,&#8221; reduced to universal laws, to an opening toward <strong>a more transcendent<\/strong>, profound, and human experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">God is no longer merely the organizer of the universe but the One who <strong>gives meaning to existence<\/strong>, and can be felt in moments of awe and beauty. From God as the &#8220;origin,&#8221; <strong>to God as the &#8220;presence&#8221;<\/strong>, felt through the human experience of wonder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For great figures in modern science, as Gregory Chaitin undoubtedly is, this is <strong>no small step<\/strong>.
