{"id":289,"date":"2014-02-04T07:00:13","date_gmt":"2014-02-04T07:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.uccronline.it\/eng\/?p=289"},"modified":"2018-09-20T14:00:49","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T14:00:49","slug":"new-research-children-need-a-mother-and-father","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uccronline.it\/eng\/2014\/02\/04\/new-research-children-need-a-mother-and-father\/","title":{"rendered":"New research: children need a mother and father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/new.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Famiglia-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-290\" src=\"http:\/\/new.uccronline.it\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Famiglia-3-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"Famiglia 3\" width=\"192\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An article <em><a href=\"http:\/\/muhc.ca\/newsroom\/news\/dads-how-important-are-they\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared<\/a><\/em> on the website of the\u00a0<strong>McGill University Health Centre<\/strong>, one of Canada\u2019s foremost health centres, reports the results of a scientific study conducted by its researchers saying that <em>\u00abeven with today\u2019s technology, it still takes both <strong>a male and a female<\/strong> to make a baby. But is it important for both parents to raise that child? Many studies have outlined the value of a mother, but few have clearly defined the importance of a <strong>father<\/strong>, until now\u00bb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The research,<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/cercor.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2013\/11\/24\/cercor.bht310.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a><\/em> on the journal <em>Cerebral Cortex<\/em>, shows that the absence of a father during critical growth periods leads to impaired social and behavioural abilities as adults. \u00ab<em>Although we used mice, the findings are extremely relevant to humans\u00bb<\/em>\u00a0says psychiatrist Dr. <strong>Gabriella Gobbi<\/strong>. <em>\u00abThe behavioural deficits we observed are consistent with human studies of children raised without a father. These children have been shown to have an <strong>increased risk<\/strong> for deviant behaviour and in particular, girls have been shown to be at risk for substance abuse\u00bb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These results, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/muhc.ca\/newsroom\/news\/dads-how-important-are-they\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concludes<\/a><\/em> the McGill University Health Centre paper, should incite researchers to look more deeply into the <strong>role of fathers<\/strong> during critical stages of growth and suggest that both parents are important in children\u2019s mental health development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another blow then, for the supporters of same-sex adoptions or children&#8217;s well-being in mono-parental families. As far as same-sex relationships are concerned, a woman <strong>cannot take the role\u00a0<\/strong>of a man and even less of a father. More research <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2013\/dec\/02\/men-women-brains-wired-differently\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shows<\/a><\/em> that differences between men and women (and therefore fathers and mothers) are not just cultural, but are grounded on <strong>biological and neurological<\/strong> causes. A man and a woman, independently of their feelings and desires of being something they are not, will always be defined by <strong>their biological identity<\/strong>.
